A man has been shot in an exchange with ICE agents in New York, according to reports.
New York Police (NYPD) has confirmed a man has been taken to hospital for his injuries sustained in the incident, which occurred at 4pm local time on Thursday (October 8). NYPD officers were not involved in the shooting, but federal law enforcement agents were, the force said.
An NYPD statement issued on X said: “At around 4pm today, there was a shooting involving federal law enforcement agents in the Marble Hill neighbourhood of the Bronx.
“The NYPD was not involved in the incident and was not on scene at the time of the shooting. The individual who was shot is at a nearby hospital and is currently conscious and receiving medical attention.”
Local news outlets have since reported the shooting took place at an exchange between the man and immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) agents.
ABC7 New York also reported that city officials had been told ICE was using a nearby Target car park on 225th Street as a staging area. One social media user claiming to be at the scene reported seeing an ICE agent wearing an Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) vest, as well as a number of masked federal agents arriving in the area.
ICE agents have been held responsible for the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minnesota earlier this year. Earlier on Thursday, a leaked report said the ‘shock gloves’ the agency is planning on handing to its officers caused intense pain, stopped fighting immediately and feared additional exposures when they were used in an army exercise.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement leaders were aware of the findings before signing a $16.7 million contract to purchase 6,000 pairs of shock gloves in August.
The shocks had a profound impact on Army employees who played the role of combative prisoners during the exercise, which took place at the military prison at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas in October 2024. The participants, several of whom were large-statured men, stopped resisting seconds after officers applied shocks by touching gloves to their skin, and were left with “fatigue, soreness and excessive apprehensiveness to being shocked again,” the study found.
“After experiencing the effects of the GLOVE, ... participants stated just seeing the GLOVE was enough to make them want to comply,” the authors wrote.
