A politician who carries the names of fascist dictators Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini has been elected mayor in Peru.
Hitler Mussolini Simeon Flores, 45, came out on top with 34% of the vote to win the election in Queropalca - but rather than running on a right wing extremist ticket as his name may suggest, he represents the left of centre Ahora Nacion (Now Nation) party.
The mayoral district in Huánuco, north of Lima, has an estimated population of just over 730.
Shockingly, this is not the first time a candidate with the name Hitler has won an election in Peru. Hitler Alba, a member of the right wing We are Peru party, was mayor of the small Andean town of Yungar between 2011 and 2014.
Even more bizarrely, in 2018 he came out on top as he contested elections with Lennin Vladimir Rodriguez Valverde. Alba called himself "the good Hitler", using the campaign slogans "Hitler returns" and "Hitler with the people".
The contest went viral at the time as it was dubbed a clash between Hitler and Lenin.
“Maybe it’s a coincidence that my name is Hitler,” he told local media at the time. “I really don’t have any objection to Hitler. It’s like any other name. For me, it’s as if my name was Juan, Lucas, or Sebastian.”
He claimed his father did not know about the Nazi dictator's legacy when he named him. It is not unusual in Peru and other South American countries to use historical figures for the names of their children.
In fact, more than 3,900 people officially bear the name Hitler in Peru, according to records from the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (Reniec), based on 2023 figures. And there are even 99 registered as "Adolfo Hitler" along with three under the name "Adolf Hitler".
Hitler Mussolini Simeon Flores, a former manager of the Simeon Sac Investment Group, won the recent Queropalca election with 229 votes – 25 votes more than Gaspar Benilde Osario Zambrano, who represented the right-wing Popular Renewal party.
The new mayor was previously a member of the Popular Force party - a populist movement led by Peru’s president, Keiko Fujimori.
But rather than introducing any fascist policies, Hitler Mussolini won with plans for agricultural development and improving road infrastructure in the rural location.
