Spanish fighter jets scrambled as two ‘aerial targets’ spotted near Romania Fighter jets were scrambled over NATO member Romania after two aerial targets were detected in Ukrainian airspace close to the border Fighter jets were scrambled over NATO member Romania amid intense Russian drone attacks on Ukraine. The response came after an aerial target was detected in Ukrainian airspace, around 12 miles north of the Romanian village of Periprava. Two F-18 jets belonging to the Spanish Air and Space Force, deployed as part of NATO's Enhanced Air Policing mission, took off from Romania's 57th Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base, the country's defence ministry said. A second aerial target was later detected in Ukrainian airspace near the Ukrainian town of Kiliya, which is near the border with Romania. There were no incursions into Romanian airspace, the defence ministry said. Residents in northern Tulcea County were sent an emergency alert at 12.17am local time, which was lifted at 12.40am. A second alert was issued at 2.18am and remained in place until 3.13am. The Russian Defence Ministry said armed forces carried out drone strikes targeting Ukraine's port infrastructure and vessels involved in supporting the Ukrainian Armed Forces. "A dry cargo vessel carrying military supplies to the port of Odesa was hit while at sea," the Russian Defence Ministry said in a post on Telegram. This is a Breaking News story.
