The "Jugendwort des Jahres," or German Youth Word of the Year, is an annual campaign that documents the popularity of new slang expressions.
"Ragebait" (in English: rage bait) refers to social media content that is deliberately designed to make people angry, frustrated or morally outraged.
It aims to drive engagement, since the algorithms of platforms like Instagram, TikTok and X reward high-energy interaction. A post that generates a heated debate through angry comments, or that is widely shared due to the emotional reaction it provokes, counts as high engagement, which leads the platforms to push the content to more feeds.
Shortlist also included 'Peak' and 'Crashout'
"Ragebait" was on a shortlist of three words for the 2026 Youth Word of the Year, alongside "Peak" and "Crashout."
All three terms are borrowed from English, demonstrating once again the language's significant influence on German youth culture.
Around one million young people, aged 11 to 20, have voted since August 28 for their favorite term.
"Ragebait" obtained 36.5% of the votes, followed by 33.8% for "Peak" and 29.7% for "Crashout."
"The close result shows that all three terms have a firm place in the vocabulary of generations Z and Alpha," said Artur Raiser, marketing manager at PONS Langenscheidt, in a press statement. "'Ragebait' held a slight lead from the start," but only by a narrow margin throughout the voting period, he added. "It remained an exciting race for us at the publishing house, too, until the very last moment."
Peak crash out
"Crashout" (used by young Germans as "crashout gehen," or "going crash out") originally comes from the English "to crash out," which traditionally means to fall asleep very quickly due to exhaustion.
But in newer internet slang, popularized on gaming and social media platforms, "crashing out" means having an intense emotional breakdown, losing control of one's temper or reacting with sudden, uncontrolled anger or stress. It is often used with a touch of humor, to emphasize that the reaction might be somewhat exaggerated.
As for the other shortlisted word, "Peak," it refers to something that is the absolute best. In German youth slang, it functions like an adjective: "That was peak football" or "that is peak comedy."
PONS Langenscheidt, a publishing company that specializes in language reference works, has been selecting the German Youth Word of the Year since 2008 — originally via a jury, and since 2020 through an online vote. Offensive, racist or discriminatory terms are not permitted. The multi-stage public nomination and voting process for next year's word will start in the summer of 2027.
"Das crazy" was selected last year, while "Aura" was the Youth Word of the Year 2024.
