A Utah couple celebrated four decades of marriage by cycling across the United States, completing an 87-day journey from Washington to New Jersey and raising approximately $23,000 for two community charities. According to Deseret News, Robert and Bliss Sawyer finished their coast-to-coast adventure in September 2026, turning a personal milestone into a fundraising effort for affordable housing and food assistance. Their journey, documented on their website, Hope Across the USA, was also covered by Utah broadcaster KSL ahead of their departure. The couple began their ride on June 20, their 40th wedding anniversary, in Bellingham, Washington, where they first met. Nearly three months later, on September 12, they reached Ocean City, New Jersey, bringing their long-distance cycling challenge to an end at the Atlantic coast. By then, they had covered 3,634 miles and climbed more than 96,000 feet in elevation, navigating mountain passes, changing weather and long stretches of unfamiliar roads. A journey driven by purpose The Sawyers, who live in Saratoga Springs, Utah, named their initiative Hope Across the USA. Their goal was to combine an ambitious cycling challenge with support for two causes they care about: Habitat for Humanity and Tabitha’s Way Local Food Pantry. Bliss Sawyer, 59, works as a mortgage loan officer and wanted to support efforts to improve access to stable housing. Her husband, Robert, 64, is a retired exercise physiology professor who has volunteered with Tabitha’s Way, a Utah-based organisation that helps people facing food insecurity. The couple raised around $23,000 during the trip, using their journey to draw attention to the needs of families who struggle to secure housing and put food on the table. From the Pacific to the Atlantic The route took the cyclists across the northern United States, beginning in Washington and passing through Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. They then travelled through Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania before reaching the New Jersey coast. The couple averaged about 48 miles a day, although their daily distances varied considerably. Their longest ride covered nearly 70 miles, while their shortest was about 20 miles. Their accommodation changed with the terrain and circumstances. They spent 34 nights camping, booked 27 nights in hotels and stayed 26 nights with hosts who offered free accommodation through Warmshowers, a hospitality network for touring cyclists. Despite the physical demands, the journey offered opportunities to experience the country at a slower pace. The Sawyers passed through mountain landscapes, open farmland, forests and lakeside routes, while also encountering communities and people they might otherwise have missed travelling by car. Learning to ride together The cross-country challenge built on decades of cycling together. The couple began riding regularly around 2000, gradually progressing from shorter outings to longer cycling holidays in the United States and abroad. Previous adventures included rides across parts of Britain and a six-week cycling trip through Norway. Their latest journey, however, demanded sustained effort over nearly three months. Heat, rain, mechanical problems and difficult climbs tested their endurance, while spending almost every day together required patience and communication. One particularly difficult stretch came after a navigation mistake led them onto a steep, rocky trail where they had to push their bicycles. Frustration and misunderstandings followed, but the couple eventually stopped to talk through what had happened. The experience reinforced the importance of recognising each other’s intentions rather than assuming the worst, a lesson that helped them approach the remainder of the trip with greater understanding. For the Sawyers, reaching the Atlantic was more than the completion of a physical challenge. It marked the end of a journey built around a shared interest, a significant anniversary and a commitment to helping others. Their ride demonstrated how a personal milestone can become an opportunity to support community causes, with thousands of miles on the road translating into financial assistance for people in need.
