NEW DELHI: Samajwadi Party supremo Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday took a swipe at the BJP over alleged incidents of harassment and violence against women during the crackdown on the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) proposed protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, which was brought to a halt with thousands of people detained, including several political leaders. The protest against CEC Gyanesh Kumar was effectively reduced to a story of restrictions, detentions and containment, with Delhi Police enforcing security measures ahead of the proposed showdown.Akhilesh shared a video on X purportedly showing multiple incidents in which women were allegedly harassed and assaulted by men dressed in civilian clothes. Targeting the ruling BJP, the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister wrote: “The country's capital, drowned in shame! This is the truth of BJP's 'honoring women.' Disgraceful!”
Saturday’s proposed protest at Jantar Mantar was met with a massive security deployment, with around 35,000 police personnel mobilised. Security restrictions, including metro service curbs and internet shutdowns, were also reported as authorities moved to prevent the demonstration from escalating. The heavy police presence and surveillance in the national capital curtailed the protest before it could gain momentum.CJP leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were detained shortly after arriving in Delhi by air.Several other leaders, including former chief ministers Arvind Kejriwal, Mamata Banerjee and Pinarayi Vijayan, were also detained amid the crackdown.
