Royal Mail says 'we can't deliver' as it urges customers to make a change It also explains that some options do not guarantee delivery - and there's a good reason for it Royal Mail has said that it "can't" deliver parcels to customers under some circumstances - and is urging them to check. The postal company says there are certain situations where their workers can’t leave a parcel - even if the householder has requested it. It says there are four times that it won't leave your post in a Safeplace including cases where a signature is required or where it isn’t safe to do so. Because of this, customers may have to change their Safeplace setting if it's not deemed suitable. The service is available for Royal Mail 24 & 48 and Tracked 24 & 48 customers. It is completely free, so you don't pay a penny for the service. Royal Mail confirms: "We can't leave an item in a Safeplace" if: - It’s unsafe for us to reach the spot - The item could be damaged by bad weather - The location is not secure (like a doorstep or recycling bin) - The item needs a signature, age, or ID verification It further explains that just because you leave a Safeplace, it does not guarantee delivery. It explains: "in a very small number of cases, it won't be possible to follow the customer's Safeplace instructions. "Examples of these include: if it would be dangerous for us to access the nominated point; if the item would be exposed to bad weather; or if the nominated point is clearly insecure. As an example, places we wouldn’t consider safe are bins, including recycling bins, doorsteps and underneath parked cars." What is an approved Royal Mail 'Safeplace'? Royal Mail has told customers that their chosen Safeplace should be a secure, weatherproof spot on your property that’s out of sight and easy for them to access. Royal Mail does not class requests to leave parcels in recycling bins as a Safeplace. What do Royal Mail do if they can't leave my parcel in my Safeplace? The postal service explains that in this instance, they will try to leave your item with a nearby neighbour. If that isn’t possible, they will return it to the delivery office and leave a card to let you know where your item is. You may also get an email and/or SMS update. If it's been returned to a delivery office, you can arrange a redelivery or pick it up in person. Are Royal Mail cutting jobs? Yes. In recent Royal Mail news, the company has announced plans to cut up to 2,500 jobs by the end of next year as part of a shake-up. The privatised postal giant said it was responding to a continuing fall in letter deliveries but a growth in its parcels business. The cuts at the postal service will represent about 2% of the 131,000-strong workforce. Frontline postal workers - posties and drivers - are not part of the proposed restructuring, it has been reported. You can read the full story here.
