ITV's Dr Amir Khan lays out 5 hormonal symptoms women shouldn't ignore "If you're dealing with any of these and being told it's normal, I'm here to tell you it's not. You deserve better. So go and talk about it with your doctor, and hopefully you'll get listened to" Women are being told not to ignore five common symptoms of a hormonal imbalance - and that they "deserve better" than having their concerns dismissed. Dr Amir Khan is regularly seen dishing out valuable health advice on ITV's Lorraine and Good Morning Britain. Aside from his day job as a GP, he has also appeared on Channel 5, and often shares useful information and tips on TikTok. Dr Khan recently posted a video outlining five hormonal symptoms all women should be aware of. Opening the video, Dr Khan said: "Let's talk about hormone symptoms women are told to ignore but absolutely shouldn't. Here are five symptoms that deserve proper medical attention." 1: Heavy or irregular periods "If you're bleeding through your pads or tampons every hour, bleeding for more than seven days, or skipping periods altogether, don't ignore it," he said. "This could be a sign of endometriosis, adenomyosis, PCOS, thyroid issues, or even fibroids." Endometriosis is a long-term condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows outside the uterus, most commonly in the pelvis, while adenomyosis is when the lining of the uterus starts growing into the muscle in the wall of the womb. PCOS, or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, is condition affecting hormone levels. The thyroid also controls hormone levels, while fibroids are common, non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the womb. Dr Khan added: "It's not just bad luck or something you should you have to put up with." 2: Persistent fatigue He continued: "Now, we all get tired, but if you feel wiped out despite sleeping well, it could be hormonal. Think low thyroid, low iron, B12 deficiency, or cortisol dysregulation from chronic stress. "It's not laziness, it could be something serious." 3: Acne that won't go away Saying this particularly applies to acne around the jawline and chin, Dr Khan said: "Adult hormonal acne is real and often linked to high androgens, like in PCOS. It can also be triggered by perimenopause." Androgens are hormones which regulate sex drive and reproductive health, as well as bone density, energy, and mood. Perimenopause is a transition phase women go through before starting the menopause, when the ovaries produce fewer eggs, and hormone levels fluctuate. Dr Khan said: "A good skincare routine won't fix it. This needs a hormonal work-up." 4: Hair loss or thinning Saying some women may also experience hair falling out in clumps, or the parting at the top of the head widening, Dr Khan said: "That's often dismissed, but it could point to thyroid imbalance, low iron levels, a scalp issue, or the menopause-related changes. It's worth investigating." 5: Mood swings, anxiety, or low libido He continued: "Hormones don't just affect periods, they affect your brain too. Oestrogen, progesterone, and testosterone all influence mood, motivation, and sex drive. "Sudden mood changes, PMS that floors you, or feeling completely disconnected from yourself. That's not just being hormonal, it's medical." 'You deserve better' Summing up, Dr Khan said: "So if you're dealing with any of these and being told it's normal, I'm here to tell you it's not. You deserve better. So go and talk about it with your doctor, and hopefully you'll get listened to."
