Log in President Trump shared a screen grab of an X post which included a fabricated quote from actor Denzel Washington in which the “Training Day” star claimed he has never met anyone “braver” or “smarter” than the former television presenter turned politician. Trump posted to Truth Social Monday the image of a post by an X user called “Red Eagle Updates” which claimed Washington. a two-time Oscar winner, had supposedly called Trump “a great friend and an even better president” and professed to be a “steadfast supporter” of the president. “I've worked with a lot of people in my life, and I've never met anyone braver, smarter, or who cares more about America than Donald Trump. He's a great friend and an even better president. I'm proud to be a steadfast supporter, and I'll never apologize for it. God Bless America and our president,” the quote reads. But Washington, who according to Federal Election Commission records has donated tens of thousands to Democratic candidates over the years, has never said such a thing. The fact-checking website Snopes conducted an extensive search of publicly available information and found no evidence that Washington ever uttered the words in question. The same words have also been falsely attributed to other public figures, including Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger and actor Matthew McConaughey, neither of whom have ever expressed any public support for the 47th president. The president’s social media activity comes as he is in the midst of a midterm election blitz that will see him hit the road almost every day until Election Day next month. Republicans are expected to lose control of the House of Representatives and could see their ranks in the Senate thinned to the point where Democrats will gain a majority in that chamber as well. And Trump’s public approval rating is at the lowest point of his second term, with a Pew Research Center survey of 5,062 adults conducted September 28 through October 4 putting his approval at 30 percent, with 68 percent disapproving, down four points since July. Reuters/Ipsos also had him at 32 percent in a poll released last Monday, the same record low it first recorded in September, and CBS News/YouGov found 39 percent approval in a survey of 2,166 adults taken September 30 to October 2. The Pew survey also found 67 percent of self-described Trump supporters now approve of his performance, a nearly 30-point drop compared to a similar poll taken in the weeks after he took office. Only 39 percent of Republicans say they are satisfied with the way things are going in the country, down from 65 percent at the start of his term.
