Wall Street banks have armies of quantitative scientists, access to the best data, and billions of dollars at their disposal. But when it comes to predicting the next inflation print, an aspiring screenwriter trading from his garage in Los Angeles is giving them a run for their money.
Former theater director Brian Golden majored in performing arts. By his own admission, he is “not a math guy.” Yet on Kalshi Inc., the biggest US prediction platform, the 44-year-old has continually been the most successful trader in markets that let users wager on economic indicators.
Golden has made over $2 million in profits across Kalshi contracts tied to economic questions, more than three times as much as the next-highest-earning public account in the category, according to Kalshi’s dashboards and data reviewed by Bloomberg. The bulk of the success reflects the expertise he has developed in the movement of consumer prices, a relatively niche area for prediction markets that also happens to be one of the most closely watched economic statistics in the world.
