Pope Leo XIV has been diagnosed with lung cancer after undergoing major surgery which saw doctors remove part of his right lung, the Vatican said.
Tests confirmed the 71-year-old has lung adenocarcinoma, which had been suspected by pre-operative tests and was confirmed during the 90-minute long procedure on Tuesday.
The Vatican said there were currently no plans for the Pope to begin chemotherapy or other therapies. "The surgery was successful, and there were no complications," the statement said.
The Pope was in the operating room for around three hours, with the procedure itself lasted roughly 90 minutes, it added.
