'I saw doctors about a mystery lump in my stomach - and gave birth a day later' Sammy Evans had no idea what the 'hard bump near her ribcage' was until she saw a doctor A mum saw two doctors with a mystery lump in her stomach - just a day before going into labour with a full-term surprise baby. Sammy Evans, 41, went to her GP surgery saying she had a hard bump near her ribcage. She thought it may be because she’d upped her ab workouts at the gym and perhaps pulled something. But she was actually full term with a surprise pregnancy and hours later went into labour with a baby she didn’t even know she was carrying - giving birth to perfectly healthy 8lb 1oz Noah. Sammy had a cryptic pregnancy - which is when the mother is completely unaware they are carrying a baby. The mum, who works for Asda George in a store near her home in Bournemouth, Dorset, said: "I was a little bit like, 'oh God, is he real?' I just couldn’t process it. “I wouldn't say there was a bond straight away. It was just ‘Oh my gosh, that's my baby.’ And then you know, even the next day, I heard a baby crying in the room, and I was like ‘What’s that noise?’ “Now I’ve adjusted and I just think he is so cute. I think babies are always a blessing.” Sammy had not had a period for months but put it down to entering perimenopause. In fact, she had fallen pregnant in December last year and carried the tot without realising it through a Neyo concert and the Champions Parade in May, played football weekly and even did a four-hour bike ride in August. She took part in a water aerobics class 12 hours before going into labour and was told off by the instructor for not being energetic enough. Partner Triston McKend (CORR), 38, got the shock of his life when she texted him from the hospital to say she was pregnant - then half an hour later sent him another to say she was giving birth. Sammy thinks she did not realise she was carrying because she had a gastric band op two years ago. She lost 10 stone and barely showed so she just thought her firm stomach was normal. She visited her GP in August for a smear test and went back on September 14 as she said she felt “a bit weird ” down below and was worried she had a prolapsed uterus. She also mentioned a strange lump at the top of her tummy which doctors initially thought could be a hernia and then decided was too big. Sammy had been going to the gym regularly, focusing on ab work, and put the loss of her periods down to her extreme weight loss, new workout schedule and being over 40. Amazingly, the doctor did a pregnancy test just in case and it initially came back negative. Another medic then came in for a second opinion and said the lump wasn’t a hernia and Sammy needed a scan. He also thought he saw a faint line on the pregnancy test. Sammy said: “He said ‘If I'm honest with you there is a faint line on your pregnancy test'. “But he said, ‘If you were pregnant, that would be glowing. He told me to do a pregnancy test when I got home, just to eliminate it.” Sammy then did a pregnancy test at home which was positive, but it did not occur to her she could be nine months along. That night, after taking antibiotics she'd been given for a UTI, she began to get stomach cramps and eventually went to A&E. Sammy said: “They did blood tests and then some doctor said to me that he wasn’t trained in ultrasounds but he’d do a quick scan just to see if there was a baby. So he does the scan and he started saying ‘Oh, there's a leg. There's an arm. There's the back.” At 7am, Sammy texted Triston to say she was pregnant. She initially thought she was in early pregnancy and might be losing the baby. “And then another lady came in and said ‘you're in labour," she said. “I said ‘sorry, no, I can't be’ and she said ‘no, no, you are. That baby's coming.” Sammy then texted Triston again to say she was about to give birth. Five hours after her admission on September 15 she gave birth to Noah. Her son Mason, nine, and Triston’s daughter Leonie, 16, are thrilled with their new baby brother. Sammy said that when she phoned work to tell them at first they didn’t believe her. She is convinced another reason it simply didn’t click is that she and Triston hadn’t used contraception for five years, so she assumed she was too old to conceive. With Mason, she had an emergency caesarian so had not previously been in labour and she only put on 3lbs between May and giving birth. Engineer Triston, who lives in Woolwich, and Sammy don’t live together, but he is now temporarily moving to Bournemouth to help.
