Body of Brit tourist who died in Cyprus vanishes from morgue before disturbing find Police were called after an undertaker arrived at the Nicosia morgue on Monday to repatriate the body only to find the man's remains had mysteriously vanished The body of a Brit tourist who died while on holiday in Cyprus vanished from the morgue where it was being kept before mysteriously reappearing under a different name. The bizarre mix-up saw police called after undertakers arrived to collect the 60-year-old’s body, only to discover it was missing. Eventually the man's body was discovered on Wednesday with a photograph showing how it had been labelled with another person's name. Questions are being asked over the shocking series of events which began when a Brit collapsed while disembarking at the airport shortly after arriving in Cyprus on September 9. He was rushed to Paphos General Hospital but was sadly later pronounced dead. Due to malfunctioning refrigeration units, the morgue at Paphos was not open, so his body was transported to Nicosia General Hospital, around 90 miles away. An autopsy was carried out to try to establish his cause of death before arrangements began to transport his remains back to his heartbroken family in Britain. However, when a funeral director arrived at the Nicosia morgue on Monday to repatriate the body staff were unable to locate it. There were no records showing the body had been moved anywhere, sparking questions about whether it had been moved without following the proper procedures. Police were called and an investigation was opened by the Nicosia Police Division. A frantic search took place and eventually the missing body was tracked down, under a different name. However it remains unclear if the body had been moved from the morgue before it was returned and wrongly labelled or if it had stayed put the whole time. There seems to be chaos in the morgues across Cyprus currently, with facilities in Paphos, Limassol and other districts out of action and bodies being transported to Nicosia. The remaining morgues have faced increased pressure and complex handling and transport issues with the increased number of bodies. Police are now looking into the incident to see whether proper processes were followed. The man’s cause of death remains under investigation but cops have ruled out any criminal activity.
