Just ask President Bill Clinton: Jerry Jones isn’t retiring anytime soon.

The Dallas Cowboys owner, president and general manager celebrated his 84th birthday on Tuesday and said he spoke with the 42nd president of the United States about retiring.

"No, I’m not. I was with President Clinton yesterday and the day before on my birthday and we were talking about that and I paraphrased the great Toby Keith, ‘We’re not going to let that old man in,’" Jones said during an appearance on Fox News’ "Fox & Friends."

Jones appointed himself general manager after buying the team in February 1989, and the Cowboys have won three Super Bowls during his tenure. Jones, who gave Steve Doocy a tour of his Texas mansion Wednesday morning, had his three Super Bowl trophies displayed alongside his three championship rings.

Also in Jones' library were photographs of him with President Donald Trump and former President George W. Bush.

Unfortunately for Jones, getting another photograph with a president seems more likely than adding another Super Bowl trophy to his library, given the way the Cowboys' defense is playing.

While the defense has undergone significant changes, Jones expected better results by now.

"Well, let’s say this, we changed everything on the defense. Not until literally I bought (the) team have we had more changes. We’ve changed out the personnel dramatically, we’ve changed out the coaching staff totally, we’ve changed out the schemes involved. That first year we won one game. We’re evolving, but it’s probably a little more time needed than I had anticipate when we made these changes this year," Jones said.

Last season, the Cowboys gave up the most points per game in the NFL with 30.1. They acquired defensive tackle Quinnen Williams last year at the trade deadline, acquired edge rusher Rashan Gary and linebacker Dee Winters in separate trades.

Jones remade the secondary by drafting safety Caleb Downs in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft while also signing safety Jalen Thompson to a three-year, $33 million contract and cornerback Cobie Durant to a one-year, $5.5 million deal.

He fired defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus and hired 34-year-old Christian Parker to replace him. Despite the wholesale changes, the Cowboys rank 27th in the NFL in scoring defense, allowing 27.2 points per game.

The Cowboys are 2-3 despite ranking seventh in the NFL in scoring, averaging 27.6 points per game this season.

Jones' Cowboys will look to get back to .500 when they play the Green Bay Packers (3-2) on Sunday night at 8:20 p.m. ET.
