Adoring fans, barriers for crowds, flowers and meeting kids - how Harry and Meghan's 'non-royal' visit unfolded Meghan, who was handed a huge bunch of flowers by someone in the crowd, told onlookers “it's great to be back” Prince Harry and Meghan gave hugs and posed for selfies as they were cheered by the crowds on their first joint public appearance since returning to the UK. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who are no longer working royals, carried out a day of engagements reminiscent of their previous visits on behalf of The Firm. Meghan, who was handed two huge bunches of flowers by someone in the crowd, told onlookers “it's great to be back” as she and Prince Harry spent 25 minutes greeting people. Their ‘non-royal’ engagement was in Nottingham - where the couple carried out their first engagement together after announcing their engagement in December 2017. Back then hundreds of people lined the streets to greet the shiny new couple. However, this time around the crowds were a lot thinner but just as enthusiastic - as a line of plastic barriers were put out for wellwishers to stand behind outside the Community Recording Studio. The Sussexes posed for selfies, met children from a local nursery and Meghan was handed a number of bouquets. Their first stop was at the studios on the outskirts of the city which was established to give young people access to music and recording facilities. Among a crowd of around 200 people waiting outside was Michael Wyer, 36, who had his beard scratched by Harry as he arrived. Thrilled Michael said he was “overwhelmed” to meet the couple. He said: ““It was absolutely brilliant, he shook my hand and scratched my beard. I said ‘I’m going for your look’. “It’s actually a privilege, you don’t get to see the royals very often. It's absolutely amazing to see them here, hopefully we’ll get to see them again.” The couple spent a good 25 minutes greeting the crowd, shaking hands and posing for pictures - before entering the studio. April Myers and Danny Hewis, from Nottingham Mencap, were delighted to meet the couple as they arrived. April said: “We got to shake both their hands. Harry said about the weather, it’s glorious for October. The Sun came out for them. “Meghan said she likes my freckles, so we’re on to a winner.” Danny added: “It’s really lovely. We’re based over the road for us it’s really exciting.and for the guys who use our services, it gives them a buzz. “For the local community, it needs that boost, we congratulate them for coming, it’s a nice thing to do.” Their second stop was due to be at Himmah Hub, a food poverty community action group, where they will join meals and cooking classes. They will then help package food for a food bank. Meghan has worked with Himmah since producing her ‘Together: Our Community Cookbook’. Finally, they will visit Epic Partners, which supports children and young people to find employment. Their visit comes just weeks after the King issued a letter stating Harry and Meghan remained non-working royals and should be treated as private individuals as the couple embark on public events.
