Pharmacist shares ‘little known’ amlodipine side effect - when to seek medical help A TikTok pharmacist has highlighted a common side effect of a widely prescribed blood pressure medication Amlodipine is prescribed to treat high blood pressure and prevent angina, helping relax and widen blood vessels so blood can flow more easily. But there are some lesser-known side effects that could make life quite difficult. Pharmacist Dose of Jit used one of his recent TikTok videos to highlight one of them, acting out a conversation with a patient where he realised he'd forgotten to give them important advice about their prescription. He explained: "It can actually cause swollen ankles because it dilates the blood vessels, increases pressure into the capillaries, pushing fluid into surrounding tissues." Amlodipine belongs to a group of medicines called calcium channel blockers, which work by relaxing blood vessels. The NHS says this type of medication can cause peripheral oedema, where fluid builds up in the tissues, commonly affecting both ankles and feet. The swelling can be uncomfortable and may make shoes feel tighter than usual, particularly towards the end of the day. Although it can be linked to amlodipine, the severity of the swelling and whether it affects one or both legs can help a healthcare professional assess what might be causing it. Swelling can have other causes, including injuries, problems with the veins, or conditions affecting the heart, kidneys or liver. Anyone who develops swelling that is new, persistent or getting worse should seek advice from a pharmacist or GP rather than assume the medication is responsible. The NHS advises people to seek urgent medical help if swelling in one leg or foot has no clear cause, starts suddenly, is severe or painful, or the area becomes red or hot. If swelling occurs alongside breathing difficulties or chest pain, call 999. People who suspect amlodipine is causing side effects should speak to their doctor or pharmacist, who can discuss the best way to manage them. They should not stop taking the medicine without medical advice, as untreated high blood pressure can increase the risk of serious health problems. A healthcare professional may review the symptoms, check for other possible causes and discuss whether any changes to treatment are appropriate. Anyone concerned about a suspected side effect can also report it through the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency's Yellow Card scheme.
