A three-year-old girl was killed after she was hit by a forklift truck driven by her uncle at a biscuit factory.
The horrific accident took place at around 6.30pm on Tuesday in Andradas, Brazil.
Little Elliza Ramos Salvador ran into the path of the forklift driven by her uncle, who was one of the company’s co-owners. He was manoeuvring the forklift inside the factory at the end of the working day when she entered its path.
The girl’s father alerted the driver, shouting out after he realised she had been struck. Elliza’s uncle stopped the vehicle and rushed to help before taking her, along with other relatives, to a local hospital in Andradas.
She arrived at 6.45pm in cardiac arrest and despite receiving medical treatment, she could not be saved.
Elliza had reportedly been in the factory yard and emerged from behind a storage rack while running through the area.
The rack is thought to have obstructed the forklift operator’s view of her in the moments leading up to the accident. The uncle told police he had not seen her.
Police were called to carry out a forensic examination, while Elliza’s body was taken to a morgue in Poços de Caldas. Officers attempted to interview her parents, Eduardo and Ana Heloísa, but they were too distressed to give statements.
Elliza was laid to rest at Andradas Municipal Cemetery on Wednesday morning.
The accident remains under investigation.
