The firing of Katie Zacharia, axed by President Donald Trump after serving just five days as his White House press secretary, has lit up the internet, with everyone making the same jokes.
“Math question: How many Scaramuccis are in a Zacharia?” quipped Democratic Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta of Pennsylvania.
“At least Katie Zacharia has her career as a lawyer to fall back on,” jeered progressive commentator Alex Cole.
Zacharia was fired exactly one week after Trump announced he was hiring the conservative California mom and followed a disastrous White House briefing. Questions over her law credentials then dogged her for the rest of the week, culminating in her admission to a right-wing podcaster that she never passed the bar.
The final nail in Zacharia’s press secretary coffin came during appearances on Fox News, where she told Trump-pal Sean Hannity that the administration did not adequately prepare her, and when she raised questions about the vetting process on Friday’s Fox & Friends.
Trump told reporters Friday afternoon that he said to Zacharia, “I said to her honestly, if I were you, I'd reconsider.”
Social media was soon flooded with jokes and memes about the new record set for the shortest time served in the role by a White House press secretary or communications director.
Zacharia’s record is less than half the 11-day one set during Trump’s first term by Anthony Scaramucci. “Records are made to be broken. But I take no pleasure in other people's pain,” he said.
Others followed suit.
“Less than half a Scaramucci,” said Democratic Sen. Adam Schiff of California.
“She lasted one Zachariath. Five elevenths of a Scaramucci,” said analyst Ed Elson.
“Imagine becoming Press Secretary and not even making it a full Scaramucci…” another person joked.
“Katie Zacharia makes Anthony Scaramucci look like Chuck Grassley,” someone else said, referencing the long-serving Iowa senator.
The official X account of the Democratic Party posted a Hunger Games meme depicting Zacharia as one of the fallen tributes, in addition to a spoof LinkedIn icon where she was “#Opentowork.”
“Already,” the account said, with a laughing-crying emoji.
The Daily Show and California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s press office both mocked up similar “in memoriam” tributes to Zacharia making light of her short tenure. Elsewhere, others made jokes about her law credentials after she was described as a lawyer more than a dozen times in TV appearances last year, despite never passing the bar exam.
“At least now she can get back to doing what she loves…Practicing Law without a license,” an account on X reacted to the news.
A New York City brewery shared a mock-up image of a new beer. “Introducing The Bar Is Now So Low It’s Not Even Being Passed, a 6.7% Cold IPA inspired by Katie Zacharia calling herself a lawyer without passing the bar,” the brewery said on social media.
But MAGA figures came rallying to Zacharia’s defense on social media, blasting critics for their “vile” treatment of her.
“Katie Zacharia is one of the nicest, smartest, most hardworking patriots I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing,” said MAGA influencer Nick Sortor. “She doesn’t deserve this absolutely VILE treatment.”
Jack Posobiec, the right-wing activist who hosted Zacharia on his show Thursday, where she admitted she never passed the bar, said she “will have a bright future.”
“Katie Zacharia is an America First patriot, a mother of four, and a loyal MAGA supporter who said yes when asked to serve her nation by President Trump,” he said.
Conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer said that she believed “people are being unnecessarily cruel” to Zacharia and they should “just leave her alone now.”
“She seems like a nice lady who just wanted to serve the President,” Loomer said. “She was nervous. It’s not a crime…The continued dog piling is just malicious. Let her be,” Loomer continued. “It’s not nice. And if I’m saying it’s not nice, then you really know it’s not nice.”
