Brazil: Lula, Bolsonaro clash in heated presidential debate October 19, 2026Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and populist Senator Flavio Bolsonaro on Sunday had a heated exchange during their first face-to-face presidential debate. The televised debate, which saw the candidates trade insults and accusations, came a week before the October 25 presidential runoff. Bolsonaro finished nearly two points ahead of Lula in the election's first round earlier this month. How did the presidential debate turn heated? The contentious debate focused on the economy, public security, corruption and Brazil's relations with the United States, before it devolved into personal attacks. Bolsonaro criticized Lula over the cost of living, public security and social spending, accusing him of spending recklessly to secure re-election. Lula called Bolsonaro "a habitual liar, a thug," alluding to his alleged ties to Rio de Janeiro's paramilitary groups. "Lying is the Bolsonaro family's strong suit," Lula said. Bolsonaro retaliated by accusing Lula of being tainted by corruption, saying during the debate that it was better he maintains a distance "because my wallet could be stolen." "Brazil is going to retire you," Bolsonaro told Lula. Meanwhile, Lula also brought up the populist Senator's ties to US President Donald Trump. "It is striking how the Bolsonaro family is subservient to American interests," said Lula, accusing Bolsonaro of conspiring to "hand over" Brazil's rare earth minerals to the US. Flavio's father also came up during the discussion. Former President Jair Bolsonaro is currently serving a 27-year sentence under house arrest over a coup attempt after his failed 2022 re-election bid. The next presidential debate is scheduled for Friday, October 23. Thousands rally in support Meanwhile, tens of thousands of supporters of both candidates rallied in cities across Brazil ahead of the debate, flooding the streets of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and other cities. In Sao Paulo, Bolsonaro's supporters called for the release of Jair Bolsonaro. On the other hand, at Rio's Copacabana Beach, Lula supporters led a "rally for democracy." There were similar events in Brasilia and 16 other state capitals. Edited by: Karl Sexton
