Champions League Power Rankings before MD3: Who's No. 1?
Key Points
The 2026-27 European club season is in full swing as we approach November, and despite a three-week international break putting teams on pause, we have a sufficient body of work to judge heading into Matchday 3 of the UEFA Champions League. So far in Europe's top tournament, nine teams are a perfect 2-0-0 to open their campaign, though some of those teams -- Stuttgart! -- are flying higher than their league form should suggest.
Real Betis! -- are flying higher than their league form should suggest. That said, there are several juggernauts crowded at the top end of the table and some true heavyweight clashes ahead this week, as Barcelona visit back-to-back champions Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday and Bayern Munich welcome Premier League champions Arsenal to the Allianz Arena on Wednesday.
What will it do to the standings?
Throughout the competition, we will be asking our writers, editors and other experts to rank the top 10 teams in the tournament in terms of who they think are the strongest and most likely to win it all. Here are your Champions League Power Rankings going into a fun week.
UCL Power Rankings before Matchday 3
1. PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN
- Previous rank: 1
- Games since MD1: defeated Brest 1-0, defeated Marseille 2-1, defeated Le Mans 3-1, defeated Man City 4-2, defeated Strasbourg 3-1
- MD3 opponent: vs. Barcelona, Tuesday
Luis Enrique's side is a notorious slow starter domestically, by its own admission, but after two draws and a defeat to open the season, PSG well and truly seem back on track now. Since a 6-1 rout of Slovan Bratislava on UCL Matchday 1, they've won every game with a rotating cast of characters. Summer signing Ferran Torres from Barcelona has seven goals already, and 10 different players have found the net across the team's 11 games in all competitions.
Young arrivals Mika Godts and Maghnes Akliouche have also embraced Luis Enrique's style of play, and while PSG do look a little wobbly at the back with the veteran Marquinhos losing a step and goalie Matvey Safonov also fallible, they have the attacking prowess to make that less of an issue. Our voters certainly aren't concerned: with 17 of 20 first-place votes, they are our consensus top team.
2. BARCELONA
- Previous rank: 4
- Games since MD1: defeated Levante 4-2, defeated Racing Santander 7-2, defeated Sevilla 3-1, defeated Getafe 3-0, defeated Galatasaray 4-1, defeated Real Betis 5-2
- MD3 opponent: at PSG, Tuesday
Hansi Flick's side began the season at pace with 17 goals in its first four LaLiga games prior to a 5-1 shellacking of Feyenoord to open its Champions League campaign. What have Barca done since? Six games, six wins and 26 more goals scored. It's an alarming speed, but so far, as we head into the chillier months, they are superb -- our voters agreed, with Barca being the only team besides PSG to get first-place votes.
Lamine Yamal (nine goals, 10 assists in all comps), Raphinha (14 goals, three assists) and Fermín López (five goals, three assists) are leading the way, but Flick is getting contributions up and down the roster, with Gabriel Jesus, Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi making merry in the front-three rotation. Beyond that, Gerard Martín (24 years old) and Pau Cubarsí (19) have formed a classy central defensive partnership well beyond their years. It's too early to tell how Barca's season will ultimately pan out, but odds suggest they will slow down at some point from their 4.36 goals-per-game mark. A tough run of games to come -- after PSG, they have Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid in the next two to three weeks -- should be enlightening.
Until then, enjoy the show.
3. ARSENAL
- Previous rank: 2
- Games since MD1: defeated Sunderland 2-0, defeated Ipswich Town 4-2, lost 3-0 to Brighton, defeated Leeds 2-1, defeated Lille 3-0, defeated Nottingham Forest 1-0
- MD3 opponent: at Bayern Munich, Wednesday
Things are going pretty well for the Gunners this season, and it's fair to say they haven't lost the hunger for trophies after last season's triumphs; 10 wins from 11 games in all competitions speaks to that appetite. However, they are playing with their dinner a little bit -- Sunday's 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest saw Mikel Arteta's side generate just one shot on target from 75% possession -- and aren't finding things easy. Viktor Gyökeres has yet to open his 2026-27 account with zero goals from eight appearances, but the defense is as stingy as ever, and that's arguably the most important thing right now while they search for more consistency in attack.
We'll learn a lot from their midweek trip to Munich -- the Bavarians are 4-0-0 at home this season, outscoring opponents 23-2 in that span -- but regardless, our voters see them as the English team with the best chance of winning it all this season. It won't be easy.
4. BAYERN MUNICH
- Previous rank: 3
- Games since MD1: defeated Elversberg 2-1, defeated Union Berlin 7-0, drew 2-2 vs. Augsburg, drew 3-3 with Viking, defeated RB Leipzig 6-1
- MD3 opponent: vs. Arsenal, Wednesday
It's still too early to know what to make of Bayern. Our voters see them as a strong contender, ranking them no lower than fifth across all ballots; it makes sense, but they have looked a little less dominant in the early going this season than we're used to. Since thumping Bodo/Glimt 5-0 to open their Champions League account, they've shown their vulnerabilities. First, Manuel Neuer's goalkeeping howlers helped Augsburg to a 2-2 draw, and then Vincent Kompany's side turned in a rather dazed and confused performance in Norway, spotting tiny Viking FK a 2-0 lead, scoring three times in 17 second-half minutes to take the lead and then conceding a late equalizer after Michael Olise's reckless red card.
Olise, who picked up a yellow card for a foul and immediately received a second yellow for throwing the ball at the head of the guy he fouled, should have that out of his system now, and there's really little reason to panic yet. Sure, Harry Kane has only nine goals and six assists in his first 10 games of the season, but this team knows where to find that extra gear when needed. Will we see it against Arsenal this week?
5. MANCHESTER CITY
- Previous rank: 6
- Games since MD1: defeated Man United 1-0, defeated Norwich City 5-0, defeated Sunderland 5-3, defeated Liverpool 3-0, lost 4-2 vs. PSG, defeated Ipswich Town 3-2
- MD3 opponent: vs. AEK Athens, Tuesday
There are two overwhelming thoughts when it comes to Man City right now: This team is really, really good on the field, and yet, does it really matter?
While the independent panels review the appeals and sanction processes over their 114 Premier League financial charges, we can't really address the second thought above; however, credit to the players for continuing to tune out the considerable noise and keep getting impressive results, and to coach Enzo Maresca for not allowing the obvious concerns about the future from derailing his squad.
City are a perfect seven-for-seven in the Premier League and top the table by three points over Arsenal, and while PSG did humble them in the petrostate Royal Rumble last midweek, Erling Haaland (12 goals in 10 games) cannot be denied. Though they exist in an undeniable limbo, the big Norway striker keeps scoring.
6. REAL MADRID
- Previous rank: 5
- Games since MD1: defeated Rayo Vallecano 4-1, defeated Elche 3-2, lost 2-1 to Atletico Madrid, defeated Villarreal 1-0, defeated AS Roma 4-3
- MD3 opponent: vs. RB Leipzig, Wednesday
We knew that Jose Mourinho returning to the Bernabeu would be must-see TV, but maybe we still underestimated what a box-office event every matchday would be for Los Blancos. Derby defeat aside, they have been grinding out results with a heady, familiar blend of grit, petulance and sheer magic, mixing sublime goals with the drama we expect from a Mourinho-led team.
Last week was the perfect example: Just days after a 1-0 win over Villarreal in which Vinicius Jr. was sent off for pulling Nathan Saliba's hair, they went to Rome and were in a 3-1 hole before scoring three times after the 81st minute to take all three points back home. Never a dull moment. Kylian Mbappé (11 goals and two assists in all competitions) is predictably leading the way, but they're getting contributions from everywhere in the squad, and Mourinho's razzle-dazzle in front of the media is helping keep the critics at bay.
It all feels so tenuous considering the combustible nature of Madrid in general, but it's great to watch.
7. LIVERPOOL
- Previous rank: 8
- Games since MD1: drew 0-0 vs. Fulham, defeated Tottenham 3-1, defeated Bournemouth 1-0, lost 3-0 vs. Man City, defeated LASK 6-3, defeated Brentford 2-1
- MD3 opponent: vs. Villarreal, Tuesday
It has been a case of one step forward, two steps back for Liverpool this season, as new manager Andoni Iraola is still searching for the right formula to make his star-studded (but thin) squad perform at its best. Imparting his teachings was always going to take time, but there is still a lot to be happy about if you're a Reds fan: Bradley Barcola has impressed in Champions League play, scoring a hat trick against LASK; Alexander Isak is back from injury; and the defensive pairing of Jérémy Jacquet and Virgil van Dijk has been quietly impressive.
Florian Wirtz remains frustratingly enigmatic, mind you, and a possible long-term injury for Dominik Szoboszlai is a real loss for a midfield without an identity. (Look to youth prospect Trey Nyoni for more minutes in the holding midfielder role.) But for now, our voters see them as a credible challenger in the chasing pack considering how Champions League games tend to be a little more open and opponents less aggressive than in the Premier League. The added space and time on the ball should give Wirtz, Barcola, Cody Gakpo & Co. more opportunities to impress, and they'll need to against Villarreal before a brutal run of league fixtures (Brighton and Arsenal at Anfield, Crystal Palace away).
8. ATLÉTICO MADRID
- Previous rank: 9
- Games since MD1: defeated Real Sociedad 3-0, defeated Osasuna 4-0, defeated Real Madrid 2-1, defeated Alaves 2-0, defeated Man United 2-0, defeated Espanyol 1-0
- MD3 opponent: at VfB Stuttgart, Tuesday
Don't look now, but Diego Simeone's side might be one of the most in-form teams in Europe right now? Signature wins over crosstown rivals Real and a confident win over Manchester United in Champions League Matchday 2 have the Rojiblancos feeling good as we hurtle toward Halloween.
A 7-1-1 record in LaLiga sees them second above Real for now, with a big game against Barcelona ahead, but they're a scary prospect in their own right. Álex Baena (five goals, three assists) is leading the way statistically, but loanee Jonathan David has settled in brilliantly up front, Cristian Romero is a perfect bruiser for Simeone's uncompromising defense (though he is hurt right now), and Julián Álvarez is wrapping up his image-rehabilitation tour following all the transfer links to Barcelona over the summer.
With a winnable run of games before they welcome Barcelona on Nov. 8, our voters fancy Atletico to make a deep run in this competition.
9. INTER MILAN
- Previous rank: 7
- Games since MD1: defeated Udinese 5-3, drew 2-2 vs. AS Roma, defeated Parma 3-0, lost 4-3 vs. Club Brugge, defeated Bologna 3-1
- MD3 opponent: vs. Shakhtar Donetsk, Wednesday
It's hard to know what to make of the Italian champions, who are simultaneously at the top of Serie A with six wins and a draw while also being outside the Champions League top 24 following two defeats from two games. Their error-prone defending has hurt them against Real Madrid and Club Brugge in European play, but it's still early in the campaign, and the league phase format leaves plenty of room for big clubs to have a wobble and still advance. Doing it without the injured Lautaro Martínez over the next few weeks is another obstacle, but manager Cristian Chivu has the nous to figure it out.
10. ASTON VILLA
- Previous rank: N/R
- Games since MD1: lost 2-1 vs. Nottingham Forest, defeated Coventry City 3-1, defeated Tottenham 3-2, drew 2-2 vs. Brentford, defeated Fenerbahce 6-0, defeated Newcastle United 1-0
- MD3 opponent: vs. Viking, Wednesday
Last but not least are Villa, who are thriving in Europe (two wins from two games) despite finding themselves in the bottom half of the Premier League in the early going. Unai Emery's magic hasn't run out yet; after another summer of key players leaving, a new-look side is percolating nicely. Johan Manzambi and Nico Jackson are an exciting new attacking duo capable of creativity and goals, John McGinn's work rate is a template for teammates to follow, and new keeper Zion Suzuki is coming off two straight clean sheets.
It's not pretty, but it's working.
