Influenza, more commonly known as flu, is a highly prevalent illness that strikes rapidly. Although most people recover without needing medical treatment, some individuals can become seriously ill.
The majority of those who catch flu will get better within a few days to less than two weeks, though certain people may go on to develop complications such as pneumonia, which can in some cases prove fatal. The flu jab provides protection against the virus, and is offered on the NHS each autumn or winter to those at greatest risk of serious illness.
In a recent Facebook post, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) outlined who qualifies for a free flu vaccine this winter through the NHS. It added: "Maybe you're pregnant, work on the frontline in health or social care, or are aged 65 or over. Whatever eligible group you fall into, you're entitled to extra protection against the serious illness that flu can cause."
All eligible individuals can receive the flu vaccine from 1 October 2026.
Who is eligible for a free flu jab?
You can get the free NHS flu vaccine if you:
- are aged 65 or over (including those who will be 65 by March 31, 2027)
- are pregnant
- live in a care home
- are aged 18 to 64 and have certain long-term health conditions
- are the main carer for an older or disabled person, or receive a carer's allowance
- are experiencing homelessness or staying in a homeless hostel or night shelter
- live with someone who has a weakened immune system
What are the symptoms of flu?
Flu symptoms come on very quickly and can include:
feeling tired or exhausted
a sudden high temperature
a dry cough
a headache
loss of appetite
an aching body
difficulty sleeping
Children's symptoms are largely the same, although they may additionally suffer from earache, sore eyes, swollen glands and reduced energy levels.
