RAF Eurofighter Typhoon suddenly declares mid-air emergency near Manchester A Eurofighter 2000 belonging to the RAF has issued a 7700 emergency code while flying at 15,000ft near Manchester An RAF fighter jet has declared a mid-air emergency over the UK. The Eurofighter 2000 has issued the 7700 code while flying at 15,000ft near Manchester, with the reason currently unclear. When a plane transmits a 7700 code, it indicates there is a general emergency. When a pilot enters the four-digit emergency code 7700 into their transponder, it immediately alerts air traffic control that the aircraft is in distress and requires priority handling. The exact nature of the incident is unclear as it acts as a "catch-all" for any emergency situation that isn't a hijacking (7500) or radio failure (7600). It comes after NATO fighter jets were sent out to inspect a British Airways plane travelling to London after both pilots reportedly failed to respond to air traffic controllers. The incident took place after the captain and first officer of flight BA899 are said to have failed to respond to calls for about half an hour. The Airbus A321, from Pafos in Cyprus to London Heathrow, was flying over Germany at the time. Eurofighter Typhoons were sent out by the German military to inspect the cockpit and ensure there was no threat.
