A 34-year-old British man has been rushed to hospital with "serious injuries" after falling 30ft from a cliff close to Amado Beach near to the town of Aljezur in the Algarve, Portugal
A British tourist has been “seriously injured” after a 30ft fall from a cliff at a Portuguese holiday hotspot.
The 34-year-old man had to be rescued by firefighters before being airlifted to Faro Hospital with severe head injuries this afternoon.
Local firefighters’ chief Antonio Angelo said after the rescue: “The victim fell from a height of around 10m and suffered a traumatic brain injury. He was conscious, but his speech was incoherent.”
The incident took place close to beautiful Amado Beach, a popular spot for surfers from around Europe, near the town of Aljezur a 40-minute drive from the Algarve resort of Lagos.
A friend of the injured Brit guided emergency responders to the spot where the accident occurred.
The alarm was raised around 3.30pm today and around 20 firefighters were involved in the rescue operation along with the ambulance service helicopter that airlifted the fall victim to hospital and Lagos Maritime Police
Rescuers said he had been using old cables attached to the rocks traditionally employed by fishermen to access an steep, rocky area called Monte do Engenheiro near to Amado Beach when one of them broke.
No extra information on the man’s condition in hospital was made available last night.
The area where today’s accident occurred is not an equipped rock climbing destination and it was not clear late today why the Brit had been descending the cliffs there.
The nationality of the friend he was with is not known.
