B&M is selling a gadget that can help people keep their entire body warm at home without the central heating on at an affordable price. The price cap increased at the start of October, meaning energy bills for the average UK household are higher, so many people will be keen to keep costs as low as possible.
Plus, with the weather turning colder and the evenings getting darker earlier, staying warm indoors will be a top priority for millions. Cost-effective ways to stay warm indoors for cheap include using portable electric heaters and heated blankets.
Many stores are selling their own versions of such gadgets to help Brits get by. B&M in particular is offering shoppers a 'cosy' electric blanket in three colours that costs just 2p per hour to run.
It is also big enough to cover your entire body, so you may not need to turn the central heating on for the whole house, risking precious energy and money, especially if you're just staying in one room. Martin Lewis and his MoneySavingExpert website recommend using an electric blanket or heated throw as part of their "heat the person, not the home" strategy, noting that it costs only a few pence an hour to run compared to central heating.
B&M is selling a Cosy Shop Waffle Heated Throw for £35 in mink, brown or charcoal. The product description reads: "There's nothing like a cosy night in. This Waffle Heated Throw is the perfect snuggle companion for cold, winter nights. Heat yourself, not your home." Key features include:
- Digital remote control
- Nine heat settings
- Therapeutic warmth
- Two hour auto shut off
- Ultra thin wire for added comfort
- Extra long power cord
- Machine washable
- Thermal
It costs approximately 2p per hour to run on standard settings. Heated throws of this size (120 x 160cm) typically operate between 60 and 100 watts at maximum output. Under the standard UK electricity price cap, this translates to mere pennies for localised warmth, making it a highly energy-efficient alternative to running central heating.

Because it only costs about 2p an hour to run, you can use it for six hours a day and spend only 12p. In comparison, running a standard gas central heating system costs around £1.40 to £1.60 an hour (if the boiler runs continuously at maximum output), which quickly adds up to nearly £9 for that same six-hour period. Switching to a heated blanket while you sit on the sofa or work at your desk can slash your daily heating costs by over 90%.
While the financial savings are massive, relying entirely on a heated blanket without ever using your central heating does come with some downsides. The most obvious issue is that the warmth is trapped under the blanket; the moment you get up to go to the kitchen or bathroom, the rest of the house will feel cold.
Leaving a house completely unheated during the winter can harm the building itself. Without the warm air from central heating to dry out the property, moisture can settle on the walls, leading to damp and mould. If the temperature inside your house drops too low, you also run the risk of your water pipes freezing and bursting.
