Log in President Donald Trump’s approval rating continues to slide ahead of the November midterm elections, which are just two weeks away, according to a new poll. In the latest survey from The New York Times and Siena University, just 36 percent of voters said they approved of the president’s job performance, marking a record-low for the poll. By comparison, 59 percent of respondents said they disapproved. Large majorities of Democrats and independents — 94 and 67 percent respectively — opposed Trump’s handling of his job as president, while 80 percent of Republicans expressed approval. Earlier this week, a Reuters/Ipsos survey found that just 31 percent of voters react favorably to Trump’s job performance so far — the lowest share recorded across either of his two terms. “I mean this is a five-alarm Trumpster fire, that’s what we’re talking about,” CNN’s Chief Data Analyst Harry Enten said when reacting to the poll on Tuesday morning. “It is not some type of anomaly,” Enten added. “This has been happening over and over and over and over again. Oops, I did it again if you’re President Trump.” Trump’s approval rating has languished near historic lows for months as voters express frustration over the cost of living and the Iran war, which has stretched on for seven months with no clear end in sight. Multiple polls suggest the Republican Party could face steep losses in the midterms, potentially costing them their majorities in the House and the Senate. Historically, the president’s party tends to lose seats in Congress in the midterms, and Trump has acknowledged this trend. “For whatever reason, I don't understand it, nobody does. Nobody's been able to explain it. Whoever wins the presidency, Republican or Democrat, automatically does poorly in the midterms,” he told reporters earlier this month. At the same time, Trump has also publicly appeared bullish about his party’s prospects, touting GOP candidates as hard to beat at rallies across the country. “All you have to do is turn out. If you turn out, we win,” he told supporters Monday in Kansas. The president has further claimed, without evidence, that Democrats will cheat in the midterms, and he has promised to send every American adult citizen $5,000 if Republicans retain control of Congress. According to an Ipsos survey released this week, a majority of Americans do not believe Trump will accept the midterm election results if the Republican Party suffers losses.
