A girl is in intensive care after her hair was sucked into a vent while she was swimming in a hotel pool in Croatia.
The incident happened at the Maslinica hotel resort in Rabac, Croatia, on Wednesday morning where the girl was swimming around one metre under the water when her hair got caught and she couldn't surface.
Local media reports that the girl from Germany had dived into the water and when she got close to the air vent, her hair was sucked in.
A family member and another hotel guest went to her aid after she was freed and provided first aid until emergency services arrived.
The girl was taken to Rijeka hospital by helicopter where she has been undergoing treatment.
It is understood that the girl is in a stable condition but still in intensive care. Dr Kristina Lah Tomulić, head of the paediatric unit at Rijeka Hospital said that the medics are doing their best to help her recover, reported local outlet Jutarnji.
But the doctor did not give any precise details about her condition and her prognosis.
A reported statement from the Maslinica hotel read: "As stated in the police statement, there was an accident at the indoor pool of our resort. We are deeply shaken by this accident, our thoughts are with the girl and her family, and we sincerely hope for her speedy recovery. From the first moment, we have been available and in contact with the girl's family and all relevant services."
It also thanked everyone who participated in rescuing the girl and provided assistance, as well as emergency services workers for their intervention.
The Labin police has started an investigation into what happened, including how her hair became caught and if any safety regulations had been breached.
The Mirror has contacted the Maslinica hotel resort for comment.
It is the latest of a series of cases where people have got into difficulty when they have become caught in swimming pool vents.
A 12-year-old boy died after he was sucked into a jacuzzi filter at an Italian hotel in April. Matteo Brandimarti was on holiday with his family over the Easter weekend at the Duca di Montefeltro Hotel in Pennabilli, near Rimini when the horrifying incident occurred.
The family had decided to relax by visiting the hotel’s spa on Easter Sunday morning. Matteo was in the hot tub when his leg got sucked into the nozzle while the hydromassage function was active, trapping him.
He became trapped underwater for almost five minutes before hotel staff managed to free him by turning off the mains power supply to the jacuzzi pump.
Emergency services were called and gave CPR, managing to get the boy’s heart started again before he was flown to hospital by air ambulance.
The 12-year-old was placed on life support equipment, but on April 9 medics declared that he was brain dead. Matteo had suffered cardiac arrest while he was under water and severe brain damage due to hypoxia.
