Brits are bracing for Storm Austen and its brutal 90mph winds — and it is scheduled to arrive within hours.
The relentless low-pressure system is heading to UK shores later tonight, with the Met Office issuing a number of warnings as experts urge households to prepare for potential flooding and power cuts.
Storm Austen, the first named storm of the season, is expected to affect south-west England in the early hours of Friday — with an amber warning for wind in place in Cornwall, Devon and the Isles of Scilly from 1am.
You can watch the exact moment Storm Austen begins to batter Britain, as a host of webcams from across the country capture the gale-force winds. The Mirror has selected livestreams from Carmarthenshire, near the Burry Port Lifeboat Station and from Newquay Harbour in Cornwall.
Flooding is feared in the next 48 hours, particularly in parts of the Southwest of England. The Environment Agency has particular concern for the South Devon coast at Beesands, Torcross, Slapton and Dawlish.
You can watch the impact the conditions have on the ocean and the coast line as much of the nation prepares for the storm's arrival with concerns of substantial damage in the hours ahead.
Already, Friday's meeting at Newbury racecourse has been cancelled with parts of the Eastbourne seafront promenade closed, and regional facilities like Betteshanger Country Park also shut.
Winds of this strength will blow some trees over, bringing a significant risk of transport disruption, and buildings could potentially be damaged by the wild winds ahead.
The Channel Islands are also expecting severe gales with gusts up to 80mph, with all schools ordered to close on Friday.
Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Chris Bulmer said: "Storm Austen is expected to bring a spell of impactful weather to parts of the UK from Thursday night and through Friday.
"While there remains some uncertainty in the exact track of the storm, there is increasing confidence in the potential for disruptive winds across parts of southwest England, which is why an Amber warning has been issued.
"Winds gusts could potentially reach 60-70 mph for a time, and these strong winds will be combined with spells of heavy rain. People in affected areas should keep up to date with the latest forecast and warnings as the event develops."
But that's not it - over the weekend, Storm Boelo will affect Northern Ireland, Scotland and parts of northern England with what the Met Office described as "impactful winds".
The Met Office is recommending preparing for possible power cuts — as past storms in 2026 left thousands without power.
Experts from NICEIC, the UK’s leading certification body for the electrical industry, are now urging households to take simple electrical safety precautions ahead of potential flooding and power cuts.
Their advice includes switching off the fuse board if flooding is expected, unplugging appliances to avoid surge damage and avoiding candles during outages.
Weather warnings
- Amber Wind Warning cover Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly, Plymouth, and parts of west Devon from 01:00 to 10:00 BST on Friday.
- Yellow Wind and Rain Warnings are valid for swathes of southern England, south Wales, the English Channel coast, and parts of Scotland.
- Red Warning has been issued the Channel Islands. Jersey Met issued a red wind warning with gusts potentially reaching 85mph. Schools are closed there on Friday.
