Andrea Shaw, 23, has maintained her innocence, blaming her children’s sudden demise on routine childhood vaccinations. But Payette County prosecutors are painting a far darker picture, alleging the young mother suffocated her own babes in cold blood. According to court filings, Payette County Prosecutor Mike Duke stated that an autopsy revealed harrowing signs of smothering, declaring suffocation "is the only conceivable explanation" for how the twins died. Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Ryon Sirucek formally notified the court of the state's intent to pursue capital punishment, citing four statutory aggravating factors: that multiple murders were committed simultaneously; that the killings were especially heinous, atrocious, or cruel; that the defendant exhibited "utter disregard" for human life; and that she poses a continuing threat to society. Shaw’s defense attorney, Joseph Filicetti, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. However, Filicetti previously stated via text message that Shaw "denies anything and everything" and insisted the prosecution "cannot prove" its case. Court records indicate the twins were found lifeless in their shared bed on May 1, 2025. Eight days prior, the children had received routine shots for hepatitis A, influenza, and DTaP. The day after their shots, Shaw rushed them to an emergency room reporting fever and lethargy. ER staff treated the symptoms as a typical vaccine reaction, gave the toddlers Tylenol and a popsicle, and sent them home. Medical experts strongly refute claims linking vaccines to the deaths, maintaining that the hepatitis A, flu, and DTaP shots are safe, effective, and crucial for child health. Within days of the tragedy, Shaw leaned into anti-vaccine rhetoric, appearing on a broadcast produced by Children’s Health Defense—an anti-vaccine group founded by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Shaw has since joined a federal lawsuit spearheaded by the group against the American Academy of Pediatrics, alleging racketeering and false claims about vaccine safety. The Academy has moved to dismiss the suit, blasting it as a baseless attack on evidence-based medicine. Indicted by a grand jury in July, Shaw remains locked up without bond as she awaits a high-stakes trial scheduled for January.
