Brits have been urged to stock up on essentials amid concerns of natural disasters or conflicts could upend our way of life.
The "Be Ready" campaign tasks Brits with preparing essential services at home in preparation for a national emergency. Prime Minister Andy Burnham said today that unexpected "seem to becoming more common."
Brits will now be considering when or how to maintain a decent stockpile in preparation, while others will be considering whether they will be able to afford what it would need to last three days without power during an emergency situation.
Brits have been advised to have enough supplies to last three days to endure a few days without electrical power and access to food in the event of a crisis. But, what will you do? Is stockpiling food and other essentials an affordable option for you?
The essentials on the "Be Ready" checklist include:
- Bottled water for three days. Three litres per person per day for drinking - more would be needed for cooking and washing.
- Non-perishable food for three days. Food with a long shelf life that does not need refrigeration or cooking.
- Hand sanitiser, wet wipes, hygiene and bathroom products.
- Torches with spare batteries, blankets, sleeping bags and warm clothing.
- An FM radio (battery or wind-up) as well as a charged power bank.
- A mix of coins and cash notes as well as cards, copies of IDs and documents and important phone numbers.
- First aid kit and first aid items as well as essential medication and medical supplies
- Baby formula and ideally "ready-to-feed" ones as well as nappies and wipes
- Pet food and bottled water
The "Be Ready" checklist advises people to build up the readiness "gradually over time" by taking it "step by step" and picking up and extra item or two when they can. It also said being ready for three days helps you manage while support reaches those most in need.
