With winter approaching, knowing how to heat your home faster matters
With the winter chill fast approaching, most of us know the basic steps to keep our homes warm and comfortable.
Yet every now and then, when you need the heat most, you may find your home simply isn't warming up as swiftly as you'd like.
Fortunately, there are ways to help your radiators run at peak efficiency and make sure you're getting the most out of your heating system.
Many radiator problems come down to a simple issue that can be easily fixed - you won't need any specialist equipment or tools, and it shouldn't set you back much.
If you notice that one particular room always feels colder than the rest, experts recommend "balancing" your radiators to ensure they heat up evenly, as advised by Plumbing Force, reports the Mirror.
Balancing your radiators is a slightly more technical process and requires a degree of patience - but the plumbing firm says it could save you money and hassle in the long run.
The process involves opening radiator valves, switching the heating off, adjusting the radiator's temperature and noting down the temperature of the pipework.
If you're still up for the task, you'll need a radiator bleeding key, a lock shield valve adjuster or adjustable spanner, a screwdriver, and a digital thermometer or multimeter with a thermometer function.
Plumbing Force recommends attempting to balance your radiators once a year, or whenever necessary.
Here are the steps to balancing your radiators:
- Turn off your heating systems
- Bleed your radiators
- Go through your radiator valves
- Create a basic map of your radiators
- Turn the heating system on and take notes
- Turn it off again and wait until it's cold
- Turn the heating back on again
- Adjust the valves on the first radiator
- Check the temperature of the radiator
- Check the temperature of the pipes
- Repeat until you finish all radiators
If your DIY attempts prove unsuccessful, you may be dealing with a more significant problem, making it absolutely essential to call in the experts. "Always call professional plumbers when in doubt. If there is uneven heating even after bleeding, signs of corrosion, or leaks in the pipework - do not attempt to do it by yourself," advised Plumbing Force.
"These are not DIY friendly. Contact your local plumbers from Plumbing Force for these extreme cases."
