The move comes a day after the Bears lost to Kansas, giving the Jayhawks their first Big 12 win of the season and ending a 14-game losing streak against Baylor that dated back to 2007. Defensive coordinator Joe Klanderman will serve as the interim coach at Baylor. Klanderman is a veteran defensive coordinator who came from Kansas State this year.
Aranda was hired by Baylor in 2020 and in 2021 led the Bears to a 12-2 record and wins in the Big 12 title game and the Allstate Sugar Bowl. Since then however, Aranda has had just one season above .500.
While the Bears sit at 4-3 (2-2) this season, the toughest part of their schedule lies ahead. Baylor has five remaining regular season game, but ends the year with consecutive games at BYU, home for Texas Tech and at Houston.
