A reported power cut at Stansted Airport affecting security and baggage systems has left hundreds of "stranded" people queuing for hours in departures
Furious passengers have claimed they were left stranded at a UK airport, after waiting for hours amid a power disruption.
Hundreds of travellers are understood to have been affected after a power surge disrupted security and baggage systems at Stansted Airport.
Images show huge queues snaking through the departures area, with passengers unable to get through security controls. Many have taken to social media to vent their frustration over the delays.
One passenger described the situation as a “total systemic collapse”.
Another said: "After 2 hours Stansted Airport’s tannoy finally made a public announcement that electrical systems related to baggage, security and immigration are not working but staff are trying to fix things. We are thanked for our patience. They should have done this ages ago."
And one person wrote on X: "@STN_Airport we have a flight at 17:05 however there appears to be a holdup at departures. What shall we do?" An assistant replied: "Hello. Our teams are working hard to restore normal operations and get passengers on their way as soon as possible. If your flight starts boarding, please flag down a member of staff. Thank you."
Stansted Airport has said that it has been impacted by a power surge in the local area and that its teams are working to restore all services.
A spokesperson for airport reportedly said: “Due to an earlier power surge that has affected the airport and local area, a number of airport systems were temporarily impacted.
“While most systems are now back in operation, some remain affected and not operating to full capacity, including security and baggage systems. Teams are working hard to restore all services and support passengers on their journeys through the airport.”
The Mirror has contacted Stansted Airport for comment.
