Brit mum who drowned trying to save sons was in Bahamas to celebrate wedding anniversary Leanne Gregory, 36, was on holiday in the Bahamas with her family celebrating her and husband Nathan's 10th wedding anniversary when their two boys got into trouble in the sea A couple’s early wedding anniversary trip ended in tragedy when a mum died trying to rescue their two boys from the sea. Leanne Gregory, 36, was on holiday in the Bahamas with her husband Nathan and their sons when the boys were swept out to sea. Both children were rescued off the coast of Bimini, but Leanne could not be saved. Now back home with their two sons, Nathan said the trip was an early celebration of the couple’s tenth wedding anniversary in December. He has also spoken of how the family's holiday turned into tragedy in a matter of minutes. Nathan said the boys had been excited and had been snorkelling in shallow water. Leanne and Nathan were sorting out towels and bags on the beach when the youngsters got into difficulty. The parents, from Nottinghamshire, went into the sea in a desperate attempt to save their sons as they were swept out by the current. The whole ordeal happened in less than 10 minutes. Nathan described the loss of his “childhood sweetheart” as “unimaginable” in a GoFundMe page where he called her a “hero in life and in death”. On the page, he described Leanne’s final moments. He said she had saved one of their sons before she was swept away. He added: “She held him until he was rescued but didn’t have the energy to save herself, after a freak wave swept the boat away from her.” Nathan told the BBC: “I’ve known her since infant school, we first got together when we were 14.. So 22 years. There are no words I can use to describe Leanne, same as anyone she has ever known. She was the purest of people, the most generous kind and beautiful person who ever walked the earth. Our relationship was perfect. She was the perfect mother, the perfect wife the foundation of our entire family.” One witness described the mum as a "hero". She said: "Both children were rescued, I was there for all of it. She's a hero. Also pray for her husband. He went out to save the other boy but a bystander was able to get him. It was truly terrible and nobody's fault. Just two boys who were eager to get in the water and then things went crazy fast. Two of the best parents I've ever seen in my entire life." Leanne was pulled from the water and taken to North Bimini Ferry Dock, where Nathan attempted to resuscitate her before emergency services arrived. She was later taken to a medical centre but was pronounced dead. The GoFundMe page has raised more than £10,000. He added on the page: “Thankful for my boys for remaining strong after seeing something nobody should ever see. But mainly thankful to my brave, amazing wife for keeping my boy above the water even as you were sinking.. you will be forever loved by everyone you knew and I know you will continue to watch over us. We love you with everything Leanne.” Nathan’s mother, Kim Jones, said he had desperately tried to give Leanne the “kiss of life”. She told The Telegraph: “It is devastating. Leanne drowned trying to save her two boys who got into trouble in choppy waters. They can both swim, they’re good swimmers, but the current was too strong. They were in difficulty and she went out to rescue them. But the waters were too rough and choppy for her.” She added: “She was the best mum in the world, just brilliant; a lovely woman who would do anything for anyone. The family loved going on holiday and went every year to Florida... Leanne and Nathan have been together for more than 20 years. They were schoolkid sweethearts and I’ve always been very close to both of them. It’s all such a shock… I cannot imagine how my son will be feeling.” Nathan also thanked those who helped the family return home. He added: “Royal Caribbean and Virgin Airlines were absolutely incredible to us and made an impossible journey home so much easier.” The Royal Bahamas Police Force said a post-mortem examination would be carried out and that foul play was not suspected. A spokesman for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said: “Our thoughts are with the family of a British woman who has died in the Bahamas. “We are in contact with the local authorities and providing support to her family.”
