Tributes pour in for ‘big-hearted’ cyclist, 72, who died after crash with pedestrian in Essex Cyclist Steve Ames, 72, died two weeks after a crash with a pedestrian, with his family describing him as a 'devoted family man' who 'left a lasting impression' on those who knew him A cyclist who was tragically killed after a crash with a pedestrian has been remembered by grieving loved-ones as a “a devoted family man” who “left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate to know him”. Steve Ames, 72, died in hospital on Thursday, October 22, two weeks after the collision on West Road, Essex, at 4pm on October 8. In a tribute to Steve, his family warned cyclists to “please wear a cycle helmet” as they spoke of Steve’s passion for his boat, cars and e-bike. "Steve Ames was quite a character and someone who left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him,” his family said. “He was a devoted family man who shared a particularly close bond with his brother, Shaun.” The tribute continued: "Steve had a real soft spot for animals. He adored his cat and always made a huge fuss of our grumpy cockapoo, Cooper. “His love of animals was evident throughout his life and is reflected in his final wishes, with the majority of his estate being left to animal charities. "He was a man of many interests and took great pleasure in his boat, his cars and his e-bike. Despite living with COPD and asthma, Steve was never one to sit still. He was always out and about, making the most of every opportunity life presented to him. "Earlier this year, Steve retired and treated himself to a 60-year-old MG, something that brought him immense joy. He also loved spending time at his local pub, where he enjoyed socialising with friends and family. "Above all, Steve had a passion for being on the water. Throughout many glorious summers, he took great pleasure in sharing his boat with others, creating happy memories for those lucky enough to join him” The family said anyone who knew Steve will “remember his kindness, generosity and big heart”. “He touched many lives with his warmth, humour and friendship, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew and loved him,” they added. "We are going to miss our Steve more than words can say, but we will always cherish the memories, laughter and love he gave us. Rest in peace, Steve. "And finally, in Steve's memory, if you're a cyclist, please wear a cycle helmet." Essex Police are continuing to investigate the crash and have urged anyone with information to contact them. Those with information, CCTV, dash cam or other footage in relation to this incident are asked to contact the force quoting incident 0854 of 8 October.
