The Met Office has issued a fresh "danger to life" warning for a wide area of the UK for tomorrow (Tuesday) as fierce winds continue to lash the country in the wake of Storm Boelo.
An 18-hour yellow weather warning for wind comes into effect at 3am tomorrow morning and will remain in place until 9pm the same day, with the forecaster's latest charts showing wind speeds could go over 70mph.
The forecaster has cautioned that there is a slight risk of injury and "danger to life" from flying debris. Large waves could also sweep beach debris onto seafronts, coastal roads and nearby properties, posing a slight risk of injury and danger to life.
The forecaster warns that a spell of powerful southwesterly winds is forecast to sweep across much of Scotland and clip the north of Northern Ireland throughout Tuesday. Some coastal or exposed locations could experience wind speeds topping 70mph, while gusts of 50 to 60mph are anticipated more broadly across the region.
A Met Office spokesperson said: "There is still some uncertainty regarding the peak gusts, but the highest winds are expected in the far north and northwest and most likely over the Hebrides. The strongest of the winds will reduce from the southwest later on Tuesday, with the far north of Scotland the last to see winds ease."
The weather warning states that the period of powerful winds could result in damaging gusts and widespread transport disruption.
The Met Office has also cautioned that power cuts could occur, with the potential to knock out other services, including mobile phone coverage.
To get prepared, the agency is advising Brits living within the affected areas to stock up on torches, batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential supplies. Those caught within the warning zone are being urged to take steps to safeguard their property and reduce the risk of injury.
This includes checking for any loose items outside their homes and making arrangements to secure them.
Brits are further advised to check road conditions before setting off, as well as bus and train timetables, in order to limit disruption and adjust travel plans where necessary. Those within the warning area should also be ready for conditions to shift rapidly, with the Met Office recommending that people keep a close eye on the latest forecast for their area.
A 60-year-old man was struck by a falling tree near Castle Douglas in Dumfries, Scotland on Sunday, while a man in his 20s lost his life in north London after a tree came down on his car, according to authorities. Two women were also hospitalised after being hit by another falling tree in Aberfeldy, Perth and Kinross
