Killer Russian missile strike as Putin targets university and Zelensky pleads for NATO help
President Volodymyr Zelensky angry over delayed defence systems as Moscow again pummels Kyiv with ballistic missiles, leaving more dead and injured as Putin steps up war on civilians
Russia launched waves of missiles and drones at Kyiv overnight, hitting a university campus, killing one person and leaving at least 15 more injured.
It means Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war on Ukraine has killed at least four people and injured more than 50 in the past 24 hours.
Weapons used by Moscow’s troops were S-400 and Iskander ballistic missiles, launched from Bryansk Oblast, and 280 strike drones,, 69 of which were jet-powered.
At least 25 locations were struck by Russia in the capital, as well as 16 locations hit by falling debris from downed missiles and drones.
Three of the people injured late last night and this morning are seriously unwell.
The latest attacks prompted anger from President Zelensky over needless delays from allies in supplying crucial air defence systems.
Ukraine’s search and rescue teams have launched missions to save the lives of victims feared trapped in the rubble left by the attack.
Nine medical personnel were among those hospitalised by the onslaught on Kyiv's Southern Bridge, a university campus, an administrative building, and medical centres.
President Volodymyr Zelensky appealed once again for NATO countries to speed up delivery of defence systems.
He added: "The artificial and prolonged delays in the delivery of interceptor packages for Patriot and National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems, which unfortunately have occurred recently, are directly helping Russia achieve the objectives of its terrorist campaign."
Hours after an initial attack after 9pm on Monday evening another deadly wave of ballistic missiles attacked the city in the middle of the night.
A fresh round of terrifying explosions broke out in the capital at around 3:30 a.m. local time.
At least seven blasts rocked the city in the space of three minutes.
The second wave came minutes after Ukraine's Air Force warned that Russian ballistic missiles were bound for the capital.
Another blast shook Kyiv some 15 minutes later, without warning.
The second wave of missiles hit an administrative building in the Podilskyi district.
Russia has attacked the Southern Bridge and other key bridges repeatedly in October, possibly in an attempt to disrupt logistics and daily life in Kyiv.
Ukraine is bracing for another appalling winter as Putin tries to weaponise the ‘big freeze’ as temperatures plummet to minus 20 degrees.
In the past Russia has degraded Ukraine’s ability to stay warm throughout the colder months by hitting energy installations and heating systems.
The escalation is happening amid warnings from NATO leaders that Russia intends to expand its war in Ukraine beyond its borders, with terror-style attacks.
Espionage attacks have occurred throughout eastern Europe as Moscow tries to exert pressure on NATO over its support of Ukraine.
There is also rising doubt over US support for Ukraine in the war as American President Donald Trump expresses warmth towards Putin, with energy deals and the lifting of sanctions.
He has also heavily criticised Zelensky, frequently and bizarrely blaming him for the war.
