Storm Austen and Storm Boelo have passed - and the weekend was very wet as a result, especially in western areas - but now temperatures are poised to tumble
These striking weather maps show significant portions of the UK are to face bitterly cold conditions within days.
Temperatures are forecast to plummet below freezing across most of the country, forecasters say. Experts at WXCharts indicate the mercury is poised to dip to as low as -2C in the daytime across at least 24 areas, including parts as far south as Leicestershire in the Midlands.
This dramatic change in weather arrives just days after the UK endured Storm Austen and Storm Boelo, which left numerous Brits grappling with the consequences of fierce winds and torrential rainfall. Two people have died following accidents linked to the storms, including a young man in Mill Hill, north London.
It has been a wet few days, with 22.2m of rain falling across Cardiff on Monday alone and parts of Somerset seeing severe downpours too. Flood alerts associated to these downpours - most of which concern parts of the east coastline of England - remain a concern.
But the primary worry thereafter will be the quickly falling temperatures, especially across Scotland. According to the weather maps, seen by the Mirror, the mercury will reach -2C across the Inverness area, for example. Even Yorkshire and Manchester could witness temperatures tumbling to between 1C and 2C, the maps indicate, reports the Express.
The Met Office's long-range forecast between November 1 and 10 reads: "Pressure is set to build in the vicinity of the UK as we move into early November, with a lot of dry weather as a result.
"Cloud amounts will be quite variable with weak fronts bringing a focus of cloud, and possibly light rain at times, but there is no significant bias to where these are favoured.
"Within the high pressure, some places, perhaps more likely towards the east, will likely see overnight and morning fog, which at this time of year could take a while to clear and where it lingers, it will remain chilly.
"Otherwise, temperatures generally fairly close to average for most during this period. Winds will generally be light, although stronger for the coastal north at times."
