Norway's top toilet designers have hit back at Donald Trump after the US president branded the nation a "s***house country" during a recent campaign rally.
Speaking in Michigan, the US on Sunday, the leader, whose party faces a humiliating battering in the upcoming Midterm elections, went on a bizarre tangent against the Nordic nation. Trump has longstanding grievances with Norway, which he thinks is responsible for not handing him the independently awarded Nobel prize, something he moaned about to gathered Republican faithfuls over the weekend.
He told his supporters: "Frankly, Norway sucks. Norway has become a s***house country, actually." The nation has hit back following the bizarre outburst, but in an unexpected, tongue-in-cheek fashion.
Immediate reaction to the remarks came from Norway's official tourist board, which was all too happy to hit back about their "s***house country" in a post on Facebook. It wrote: "We heard some noise about the 's***house country'. Well, what we can say, we do have some of the most spectacular toilets in the world. With Love, Visit Norway."
Accompanying the post were several pictures of some of the country's most elegant toilets, including one building of modern design sitting outside a stunning Norwegian landscape. The pictures were accompanied by the headline: "Meet the world's most beautiful (s**t house) toilets."
Trump's remarks, which weren't so tongue-in-cheek, were made as he discussed immigration to the US, saying he would allow people in from select countries. But he said he wouldn't allow Norwegians entry "because I didn't get the Nobel Prize". Trump has furiously railed against the nation since returning to office in 2025 over widely disputed claims to the Nobel Peace Prize.
The US president falsely claims to have resolved eight wars during his second term, and, despite having started a war with Iran this year, believed he was still in the running for the prize this year. When it went to South African former International Criminal Court (ICC) judge and rights defender Navi Pillay, he was furious.
He claimed to have "never heard" of Pillay, who he said was a "mystery person", adding "This is an indelible stain on the country of Norway...we will not forget."
The prize, which was controversially awarded to Trump's predecessor Barack Obama, is famously not awarded by the nation of Norway. Winners are hand-picked by the Nobel Prize Committee, which functions independently of Norway's government.
While that hasn't stopped Trump from unloading on the nation, its leaders have been left unbothered by the remarks. Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide responded by saying Trump fully understands the government has no involvement in the prize, saying after the comments: "He knows very well that the Nobel Committee is independent. We have reminded him of that, in case anyone is wondering - and that is still the case."
