A man dressed as a character from “Dumb and Dumber” is in critical condition after being shot while allegedly trying to force his way into the wrong Houston apartment early Thursday.
The shooting happened around 2:26 a.m. at an apartment complex in the 2300 block of Bering Drive in the Greater Uptown area, Lieutenant R. Willkens with the Houston Police Department told local news reporters Thursday.
The injured man was taken to a nearby hospital with a gunshot wound to his upper body and was listed in critical condition.
The resident was asleep on his couch when he woke to someone shaking the doorknob and trying to kick the door open. His girlfriend and their 1-year-old child were asleep in a bedroom at the time.
The resident asked his girlfriend whether she recognized the person outside, but she said she did not know him. The ma then grabbed an AR-15 rifle and opened the door to find out what the would-be intruder wanted, investigators said.
The encounter escalated when the man allegedly tried to push his way inside, repeatedly insisting, “This is my apartment.”
The resident attempted to push him back before firing a single shot, striking the man in the upper body.
Investigators said the injured man was wearing an orange suit and a top hat resembling the outfit worn by Jim Carrey’s character in the 1994 comedy “Dumb and Dumber,” also starring and Jeff Daniels.
Police believe the man lives in the same apartment complex and may have been intoxicated when he mistakenly entered the wrong unit.
The circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under investigation.
Both men are believed to be in their 30s. The resident and his girlfriend were not injured and are cooperating with investigators. Police have not released either man's name, and it remains unclear whether charges will be filed in connection with the shooting.
