Bayer Wins St. Louis Roundup Trial, Bolstering Settlement Push
A jury in St. Louis rejected claims by three women who blamed Bayer AG’s Roundup weedkiller for their cancers, bolstering the company’s effort to contain the cost of tens of thousands of similar lawsuits in the US that it has offered to settle.
The unanimous verdict reached on Thursday was the first since a US Supreme Court ruling in June that effectively blocked lawsuits based on claims that Bayer failed to include a cancer warning on Roundup labels. Lawyers in the St. Louis case had made a different argument, alleging Roundup was defectively designed, meaning it was an unreasonably dangerous product and shouldn’t have been sold.
