One of Italy’s busiest airports is set to close to air traffic for the entire month of November.
Naples Airport will shut its doors to allow for extensive renovation work on its runway and connecting taxiways, which will shore up the long-term safety, reliability and operational continuity of the existing infrastructure.
It will also include the replacement and modernisation of the airport’s visual aids lighting (AVL) systems, which include the runway and taxiway lighting and illuminated signalling systems, essential for guiding aircraft during take-off, landing and taxiing, especially in poor visibility.
The project, which will cost around €30 million, is being carried out at a time which typically sees fewer flights than in peak season. To minimise disruption further, the work will be done continuously, for 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Workaround plans in place to avoid major disruption
For travellers needing to get to the region, some airlines plan to transfer their aircraft to – relatively – nearby Salerno Costa d’Amalfi and Cilento airports.
Flights here are operated by the likes of Ryanair, easyJet and Vueling, and fly to and from Bergamo, Milan Malpensa and Milan Linate, Genoa, Turin and Trieste in Italy.
Further afield, flights will run between the airports and Amsterdam, Barcelona, Casablanca, Dubai, Dusseldorf, Madrid, Paris, Sharm el-Sheikh and Stuttgart.
To handle the strain of Naples Airport’s closure, additional bus services between Naples Piazza Garibaldi and Salerno Airport will operate throughout November.
Services to Salerno railway station are also set to be increased, while existing routes to Potenza, Eboli, Battipaglia and the Amalfi Coast will continue to run as usual.
For those not keen to rely on public transport, a shared taxi service with fixed fares has also been introduced on a trial basis. It will cover two routes, one from Salerno Airport to Naples Central railway station, and the other from Salerno Airport to Salerno Central railway station.
