A Tennessee family has been left in mourning after a toddler was killed at a pumpkin patch.
Nyxailia Hinton died at just 21 months old on Tuesday, after falling and being fatally struck by a car. According to a GoFundMe page launched to raise money for funeral costs, she was rushed to the hospital, where she died just a few hours later.
“She just lit up the room,” Peandra Hinton, the girl’s mom, told WVLT. “If you were having a bad day, you see Zayla, she’s gonna turn it all around.”
According to Hinton, the girl was taken to the pumpkin patch by a babysitter and once at the site, she was struck by the car.
A spokesperson from the Sevier County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to the outlet that SCSO personnel and other emergency responders attended the scene on Happy Hollow Lane in Sevierville.
The Independent has contacted the SCSO for comment.
The toddler was taken to the hospital and placed in the intensive care unit with a cracked skull and cracked ribs. She was also in need of a blood transfusion, according to the GoFundMe page.
However, just after midnight on Tuesday, she died.
“No parent should ever have to face this kind of pain, and PeAndra (sic) is now carrying the unimaginable grief of losing her child while also trying to hold her household together as a single mother who is out of work,” the page reads.
As of October 30, the page has raised over $7,000 toward its $12,000 goal.
Nyxailia’s father says that her family wants to see justice for their loved one.
“We want justice for her,” the toddler's father told the outlet. “And we ain’t letting up. I don’t care if someone’s feelings get hurt; this has torn up her whole family. She wasn’t even 22 months old.”
Hinton added: “The fact that I couldn’t wake up this morning to my baby, it really tore me up.”
Sevierville, the city in which the incident took place, is widely known as one of Tennessee’s tourist hotspots.
The city serves as a gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains and has a bronze statue depicting country singer Dolly Parton, who grew up in a rural community near the area.
