Donald Trump struggles to keep eye open at rally before blasting health concerns Donald Trump has been on a whirlwind tour of deep-red states as he attempts to shore up his base ahead of crucial midterm elections that could end his legislative agenda Donald Trump paused a campaign rally as he struggled to keep his eye open before lashing out at critics amid claims about his health. The US President halted his midterm campaign rally in Daytona Beach, Florida, on Friday, to wipe his eye after struggling to keep it open. "Do you mind? I got a thing in my eye, watch this," Trump told the crowd. "Ah, that's so much better. "I wish I had little eye drops," the president added. Trump then lashed out at claims he cancelled rallies this weekend due to health issues. He said: "If I did, they'd say I was seriously ill, that there's something wrong with me." The 80-year-old has been on a whirlwind tour of deep-red states ahead of crucial elections on Tuesday that could derail his legislative agenda for the remaining two years of his term should Democrats win the House, Senate or both. While Trump has been keen to drive turnout among his loyal base, he pulled out of two rallies in Kansas and Iowa, where Republicans are facing strong challenges from Democrat candidates. Speculation had grown that he cancelled the events due to his ill health, though the president has insisted he felt "perfect". Trump's health has been a concern among his detractors since 2016. He surpassed Ronald Reagan as the oldest person to be named US President at his inauguration in January 2017, and bruises on his hands during his second term have generated speculation about his health. The Republican firebrand has declared he is healthy on multiple occasions. While Trump's health concerns have been subject to speculation, the majority of Americans have listed the cost of living, corruption and concern over the War against Iran as their leading issues ahead of the midterm elections. Democrats are heavily favoured to take control of the House and the race for the Senate has been rated as a toss-up by multiple polls. Republicans have found themselves playing defence in once-reliable red states where Trump won by double digits against his Democrat rival Kamala Harris in 2024. In a bid to stave off the worst outcomes, Trump opted not to challenge Democrats in their strongholds as he did when holding a rally in New York City in 2024, and instead has flown to multiple Republican held states in the southern US. But it has not been smooth for Trump, who has faced being heckled at multiple venues.
