Need to know DVLA update on driving licences that need medical conditions assessed - key details The DVLA has issued a Parliamentary update on applications for around 280,000 UK drivers DVLA updates motorists with medical conditions on their applications: what you need to know - Drivers waiting for some kinds of licences after declaring a medical condition face delays of almost two months, with the DVLA taking an average of 55.8 days to make a decision in its latest figures. - The average wait peaked at nearly 65 days in August, almost 30 days more than at certain points in 2025. Straightforward applications, which do not need a medical assessment, are usually processed within 10 working days. - The delays affect Group 2 licences covering lorries, HGVs, buses and coaches, with more stringent medical standards than Group 1 licences for cars and motorbikes - and there around 280,000 such drivers in the UK. - Parliamentary Under-Secretary Justin Madders acknowledged the issue, saying: "Applications where a medical condition must be assessed before a licence can be issued can take longer to process as the DVLA is often dependent on information from third parties, including medical professionals." - Four changes have been introduced to tackle the backlogs, including a text message trial, a new casework system, additional staff and a new digital medical services portal covering around 1,600 conditions. - There is currently no timetable for moving to a fully digital application system.
