Heavy rains have triggered flash floods and river flooding across parts of the US Southwest and Mexico, forcing evacuations and rescue operations. While emergency teams have been rescuing residents in flood-hit communities in the US, videos from Mexico showed powerful floodwaters sweeping away cars. Hurricane Simon battered Mexico’s Pacific coast on October 12 with heavy rain and strong winds, while Tropical Storm Rachel brought heavy rain and gusty winds to the US Southwest. Arizona has reported flooding in several communities, with emergency teams rescuing people trapped in homes and carrying out boat rescues, the Associated Press reported. In Pagosa Springs, a tourist town in southwestern Colorado known for its hot springs and ski resorts, officials warned of potentially catastrophic flooding as the San Juan River was forecast to reach 21.9 feet. This would exceed the 17.8 feet recorded during the devastating 1911 flood that destroyed much of the town. Flood watches and warnings were issued on Saturday for nearly all of Arizona and parts of southern Utah, southwestern Colorado, western New Mexico and southern Nevada, including the Four Corners region. The National Weather Service warned that continued rainfall could cause further flooding and make roads in remote areas impassable. A meteorologist in Tucson said the region was receiving two to three months' worth of rain within a few days. Forecasters estimated that some areas could receive up to four inches of rain, with the wet weather expected to continue through Monday. Mexico: Flash floods sweep cars away in Los Cabos Videos from San José del Cabo in Mexico's Baja California Sur state showed powerful floodwaters sweeping cars through the Costa Azul stream as heavy rainfall turned normally dry channels into raging rivers. Torrential rain, reportedly exceeding 100 mm, also flooded roads and overwhelmed local drainage systems. A video from Los Cabos, Mexico, showed cars being swept out to sea as flash floods turned dry riverbeds into raging torrents.
