British Airways flight to Majorca declares mid-air emergency and makes sudden U-turn Palma de Mallorca-bound flight BA2672 was flying over France when it was forced to U-turn back towards London Gatwick Airport A British Airways flight headed for Majorca declared a mid-air emergency and made a dramatic U-turn over France. Flight BA2672 was flying at 37,000 feet when the Airbus A320 turned back towards London Gatwick Airport, where it had taken off about 40 minutes earlier. The aircraft was bound for Palma de Mallorca Airport and left Gatwick at 4.23pm yesterday, landing back at 6pm. The Airbus A320, which can fit up to 180 passengers, was over central France when flight crew received a notification of a landing gear control system failure, Air Live reports. An assessment of the issue indicated it could not be resolved by maintenance crews at Palma de Mallorca Airport and so the aircraft had to turn back. A squawk 7700 code was sent out by the pilots, indicating a general emergency to air traffic control. The aircraft then landed back at Gatwick where it was met by emergency ground crews who were waiting as a standard safety precaution. Passengers on the flight were provided overnight accommodation and the flight will depart to Palma de Mallorca later today. A spokesperson for British Airways said: "The aircraft safely returned to London Gatwick following a technical issue. "We have apologised to customers for the delay to their journey and our teams provided overnight accommodation. The flight will depart later today."
