49ers general manager John Lynch announced in January that the 49ers would be moving on from Aiyuk, but the wide receiver has been in limbo because he has not formally applied to be reinstated.
Aiyuk has repeatedly voiced his displeasure with how the Niners handled the situation as they continued to retain his contractual rights. In early June, Aiyuk began to speak out publicly for the first time. In a pair of videos posted to Instagram, he called the 49ers "dumb" and "stupid" for paying him and suggested that the team was scared to release him because of how he might play for another team.
Just before that, on June 3, Aiyuk also dealt with the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office issuing a warrant for him on the misdemeanor charge of exhibition of speeding. That warrant is in reference to video Aiyuk posted to YouTube in December in which he appears to tape himself from the driver's seat going well over the posted 40 mph speed limit on a road that runs past Levi's Stadium.
