Plane crashes in Pachuca before huge fire as two crew members killed
A private aircraft carrying two crew members crashed near the 18th Military Zone in Pachuca, Mexico, after a reported mechanical failure.
Two crew members have been killed after a small plane crashed in Mexico, sparking a huge fire, authorities say.
The aircraft came down shortly after taking off from Ingeniero Juan Guillermo Villasana Airport in Pachuca on Monday morning, with firefighters, soldiers and paramedics rushing to the scene.
The victims have been identified as pilot Moisés González Meléndez and co-pilot José Jaime Jarkin Ramos, according to Mexican news outlet El Debate.
The Cessna T210N had departed at around 9.30am local time and was heading to Cuernavaca when it crashed approximately five minutes later.
Witnesses reported seeing the plane flying at a low altitude before striking power lines near El Tezontle Avenue, close to the 18th Military Zone.
The impact caused a fire, sending thick smoke rising above the area as emergency crews rushed to tackle the flames.
Authorities reported no injuries to people on the ground or major damage to nearby buildings.
The bodies of both crew members were recovered from inside the wreckage after firefighters brought the blaze under control.
Mexico's Attorney General's Office and the Federal Civil Aviation Agency are expected to investigate the crash and establish what caused the aircraft to come down.
Initial reports suggested the plane had experienced a mechanical problem shortly after take-off, although the exact cause has not been confirmed.
