US midterms 2026 live: What time will we know midterm election results in UK? Donald Trump could face a humiliating evening as a Democrat 'blue tsunami' looks set to wash over his Republican party - with huge losses expected in Texas and Alaska Americans are heading to polls for election day - and Donald Trump has, unsurpisingly, been highly active on social media. The US President has thrown his support behind dozens of Republican candidates in a series of Truth Social posts, while also sharing links directing voters to polling information. The endorsements span several states, including Texas, a traditionally Republican stronghold, where Trump has urged voters to back the party's candidates. But it, and other Republican strongholds, have been predicted to flip to the Democrats with Trump's grip on US politics poised to weaken dramatically. The Democrats need to flip four seats in the Senate and three seats in the House to gain control of the chambers from the Republicans. The key Senate battlegrounds are in Alaska, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Ohio and Texas You can see what time we'll get the results in the UK by following our live blog below... What time will we know the US midterm election results? Much like a dramatic local election count that stretches long past polling day, a definitive outcome for total control of Congress frequently takes days to crystallise. What to know as America heads to the polls The Democrats need to flip four seats in the Senate and three seats in the House to gain control of the chambers from the Republicans. The key Senate battlegrounds are in Alaska, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Ohio and Texas, while various House seats could change across the US. The Democrats are hoping to flip several seat where Trump previously won by wide margins. Power in Congress would give Democrats a means of rebuffing Trump in his final two years as President. 'How Donald Trump could try to steal the US midterms...' The Mirror's US Political Editor Mikey Smith writes.. We've all seen what Donald Trump does when he loses an election. In 2020, when he lost to Joe Biden, he laid the groundwork early, suggesting postal votes were prone to fraud for months ahead of the vote. On the night, when the ballots being counted began to look more blue than red, he stood up at the White House and declared victory anyway. He refused to concede even after every state and news outlet had confirmed the result. And for months he and his team pursued preposterous lawsuits in a vain bid to have the result overturned. All of this culminated in January 6th 2021, when Trump encouraged his followers to march on the US Capitol Building in Washington DC to prevent the certification of states' electoral votes. What followed was a bloody insurrection, an attempted coup d'etat in the world's greatest democracy. There is no reason to suspect Tuesday's midterm elections, which Republicans are expected to lose very badly, will prompt much of a different response from Trump. You can read Mikey's full analysis ahead of tonight's results here. Man charged with mailing letters containing powder ahead of the election The powders turned out to be yeast or flour, though not all letters have been fully tested, the FBI said in a court filing made public Tuesday. Robin Martin is charged with conveying a hoax and mailing threatening communications. Martin was arrested Monday and was expected to make an appearance Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Oklahoma City. Online records do not list an attorney to comment on his behalf. Federal authorities announced last month that they were investigating letters with "suspicious substances" that had been mailed to congressional and election offices nationwide and urged recipients to treat the mailings as "potentially hazardous." The packages led to the evacuation in October of election offices in Louisiana and Oklahoma. Numerous states, from Idaho to Florida, said their election offices either received letters or had them intercepted by the Postal Service. Investigators believe more than 700 mailings appeared to be associated with the same sender. Florida polling stations relocated after heavy floods Officials in Brevard, Broward, Highlands, Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee, Palm Beach and St. Lucie counties set up alternative polling sites for 21 original sites involving 30 precincts in areas where the original sites were damaged by flooding or the roads to get there were unsafe. Polls now open in Hawaii Gov. Josh Green, a Democrat, is heavily favored to win a second term in a state where Republicans are rarely competitive. Democratic Senate leader 'nauseously optimistic' Democratic Senate leader Chuck Schumer said he was optimistic that “there will be a new Democratic majority in the United States Senate" when polls close today. “We don’t want to count our chickens before they hatch. So I’d characterize our mood as nauseously optimistic,” Schumer said. Polls open in Alaska The polls have just opened in the key state of Alaska, where people will be closely watching the Senate race. Trump-ally Republican Dan Sullivan is up for re-election but polls suggest Democrat Mary Peltola could win. The state has been at the centre of a controversy surrounding an independent candidate named Daniel J Sullivan. Trump , through the Justice Department, filed lawsuits seeking to block the certification of Alaska's race if Republican incumbent Dan Sullivan loses. A federal judge on Sunday dismissed the case. Staggering 13 million more early ballots cast in this midterm 2022 Early Vote: 45 million Come on then, what do we all think will happen? 👀 In pictures: Election day across the US Donald Trump claims results will be 'better than you think' This comes after a NBC poll published yesterday put Trump's approval rating at a record low of 40% - but some pollsters have it as low as 31%. “I think the results are going to be better than you think.”Donald Trump Zelensky warns of 'massive' Russian attack as world watches US midterms In a video posted last night, he said: “The world will be watching the American midterms, and what is happening here in Ukraine, along with our difficulties with air defence and Patriot missiles, will be overlooked." Russian ballistic missiles and drones damaged energy facilities in 10 Ukrainian regions on Tuesday - part of a campaign by Moscow to pressure Kyiv over the winter months. Polls open in more states Why are eyes on Alaska? Alaska's senate race has been unexpectedly spicy. An independent third party candidate Daniel J Sullivan Jr, is running with a very similar name to the Republican incumbent, Dan Sullivan. It's been alleged this 'spoiler' candidate was encouraged to run as part of a project hatched by a Democrat aligned group. And although Senate Candidate Mary Peltola has denied any involvement, Trump has demanded she be "removed from the ballot and prosecuted". So-called "Ballot stacking", where rival campaigns encourage spoiler candidates to run, or support them financially or with advertising in the run-up to the vote, is not illegal and is widely practiced by both parties. Currently Republicans hold both senate seats, plus all of the major statewide jobs in Alaska. The Senate race is still a 'toss-up' with the New York Times/Siena poll putting Peltola in a slight lead over Sullivan. But in the race for the Governor's mansion, Democrat Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkis is now rated "likely" to win the election.
