Grizzly bear 'attack' leaves one dead and one missing in British Columbia Officials in British Columbia, Canada, say one person is dead and another is missing after a suspected grizzly bear attack in the Bella Coola area One person has died and another is missing following a suspected grizzly bear attack in Canada. A team of conservation officers in Bella Coola, British Columbia, are investigating the incident. The British Columbia Conservation Officer Service says one person was found dead in the Snooka West Trail area on Monday, and a search effort continues for the second person. Family members reported the pair missing on Sunday. People have been urged to stay away from the trail system “for their own safety” and to allow officers to conduct their work. The British Columbia Conservation Officer Service was called after evidence at the scene suggested an animal may have been involved. It says efforts are underway to locate, trap and assess any bears involved. Last November, an adult and three children were badly injured in Bella Coola after a grizzly attacked a group of about 20 elementary school students and teachers. The province’s environment minister, Tamara Davidson, told reporters multiple teachers “took great risk” when they intervened to protect children during the attack. “They were well prepared, and they were the true heroes.” Van Damme, who has worked with the conservation service for 25 years, said it was the first time in his career he had seen a grizzly attack a group in that manner. “This is extremely rare,” he said at the time. “We are trying to determine the behaviour and why the bear acted in the way it did. "Thankfully, the teachers were prepared. They did everything they needed to do and they avoided serious injuries to others.”
